Question about 1993 Lincoln Continental

Ignition switch wont turn off the motor

I own a 1993 Lincoln Continental Signature series. The ignition switch will start the car but will not turn it off. There is no resistance when turning the key to the off position and the steering wheel won't lock. To stop the engine I need to pop the hood and pull the ignition fuse then remove the ground so the battery won't go dead.

Your help will be greatly appreciated!!
Thank You,

So it is the link between the key and the ignition module? I've see it looks like plastic and there is a section missing.

I have the same problem. It's the ignition switch actuator rod. I've already went thru the lock and ign. switch, both are fine.

How to install ignition switch on 1996 lincoln continental

Most fords you turn the key to the on position and on the bottom of the steering column there should be a hole in the plastic take a screw driver stick it in the hole there's a little ball bearing in the ignition switch push it in and pull the ignition out at the same time. Also make sure your key doesn't have chip in it if it does you will need the key reprogrammed or have the new switch made to the old key if it has a regular key don't worry about the programming the car will not start if not programmed it will turn over but won't start theft light will flash

I have a 99 Lincoln town car signature series when I start the car it has overdrive on ..and I have to press the button to turn it off is that normal?

Yes. The DEFAULT is on. If you turn it off, it will turn back on if you turn the ignition switch off and back on again. The only reason you would want it off is if you are towing a trailer. In this case, you must turn it off each time you turn the ignition switch on to prevent transmission damage.

The only other time you would want to turn it off (towing or not towing) is if you are climbing a LONG STEEP hill - like in the mountains, and the transmission is shifting in and out of overdrive continuously.

ok you will need a puller to remove the stering wheel once you have it off you will
see a phillups screw holding the ignition in. once the screw is out you will have to
play with it but it will come out.

hope this helps you
