Question about 2001 Pontiac Sunfire
Check the switch under the brake pedal assembly. use a check light. black aligator clip tp ground. point of light to where the wire attachments are located at the switch. depress the brake and see if the light goes on when you press the brake. If it does not replace the switch.

Just a thought but why are you trying to push the shifter button in when you are not on the brake
