Question about 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

How do I remove the center lug on wheel?

I got a flat tire yesterday on my 05 touareg and to my surprise there was a center lug on the tire, under the wheel cap that is holding the tire on. Now, this lug seems to have a crazy star shape to it, which is huge, that very obviously needs a special tool to remove. How and where do I get this damn tool on a Sunday? And why do I not have it with the rest of the stuff I have to change my tires?

On our Mazda3 the special lug removal tool was in the glove box in a blister pack with spare lugs. After having the car serviced the tool dissapeared and after searching I found it in the lug removal vrench where the dealership mechanic left it. Hope this helps. Alex

SOURCE: removal of center lug on 05 Touareg

These are called Torx bolts/nuts and they are intended to prevent theft, any store like Sears will carry the Torx (also called star) line of sockets, they are also available on line from different tool outlets, Carquest and Napa auto parts should have them too.

After removing the front lug nuts and small center nut , i am not able to remove the wheel and tire

in past experience I've seen the center of the wheel actually rust or just from normal road grime stick to the hub I had to kick the outer edge of the rim if that don't get it loose dictating on the kind of rim you have can use a pies of wood so you don't damage the rim but put the wood against outer edge of rim and hit it with a hammer will have to go back n forth from left to right side of wheel but it will come loose

please keep in mind this only works if all lug nuts are indeed off the center nut you was talking about does not hold the rim in place it hold the axel tight in the hub, which I am assuming you have a front wheel drive vehicle due to your question

Flat tire on my 1983 mercury cougar

#1 Look carefully at the CENTER of the hub cap. Gently pry the center cap off. The rest will be self explanatory.
Or
#2 Take one lug nut off . Sometimes there is an extra set of small lugs to hold the hub cap on.
I do apologize for the two choices. Just cannot remember which way the Cougar works.

Is there a special tool needed to take off the hub cap or is it just a regular one?

Hi :

Mercury sables had a couple different styles of wheels/ wheel covers, so basically if you have an alloy wheel with a center cap, you can remove that with a wide bladed screw driver in the slot that is on the edge. Same goes if your car has a full wheel cover. You can either use the flat tip of your tire lug nut wrench, or a very large screwdriver to pry it off of the wheel

What are the proper lug nuts to use on my 97 rodeo with 16" wheel

the lugs should have a flat washer and a spring washer the lug should have a long cylinder shape on one end that is tapered to tighten up the wheel the washers hold the plastic hubs in place you might try a wrecking yard or a dealer for them

Spare tire location?

With the new 2008 models, the spare tire was moved from the rear of the van to a spot below the front seats. The lug for the tire winch is located under a round cover in the floor just in front of and between the two front seats. If you look under the van, you will see the black tire-shaped cover for the spare.

Change a flat tire

The wheel is just rusted on the hub. Just take a rubber mallet and hit a few times. Or kick it a few times. This is a very common thing.

It's just seized on the hub from heat and exposure to the elements. You can either kick the snot out of the tire itself (kick it at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions), repeatedly until it comes off, or hold a piece of a 2x4 against the tire and hit it with a mallet - hard. Don't hit the wheel, just the tire. Hitting the wheel may dent it, but hitting the tire (or kicking it) won't hurt it. Beat it like that and it'll come off.
