What will cause 5 and 7 cylinders to miss fire

1 Answer

A

In most cases some type of ignition component failure,

Personally I would say seldom a spark plug,go with ignition
coils or coil packs or modules, depending on what your engines
system has.

Misfires are not always cut & dry, as to the cylinder codes

So I wouldn't start replacing parts, have it proper diagnosed

SOURCE: miss fire on #6 cylinder. Potential causes. Which

The #6 cylinder is the last cylinder on the right side while you stand in front of the vehicle. Firing order is 1 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2. Potential cause and best case scenario is you have a defective spark plug causing improper ignition. Another scenario is the #6 coil pack is defective. If you have not replaced the spark plugs (30,000 mile intervals), then the issue may be just the spark plug(s).

SOURCE: miss fire on cylinder 5 on my 2002 volvo s80

Check the codes, if there is a misfire it may tell you which cylinder(s) is misfiring. The coils fail, and make sure to use Volvo spark plugs!

SOURCE: cylinder not firing

Have you verified that you are getting spark at the plug when the engine turns over? To do this you can remove the spark plug and insert it into the end of the plug wire. Set the electrode against something metal on the engine. Crank the engine and watch for spark. If you get spark, then you can start thinking about timing, cylinder, fuel problems. If you don't get spark, think about distributor cap/rotor or wire problem.

SOURCE: No compression in #5 cylinder V6 SOHC?

Sounds like a blown head gasket, bad valves or bad rings. If this is the only cylinder affected then the head gasket is more than likely the problem.

What is the firing order on 2004 alero.

The firing order for a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero with a V6 engine is typically 1-2-3-4-5-6. Cylinder 5 would be the fifth cylinder in the firing order. A misfire in cylinder 5 could potentially cause the symptoms you described, including the car shutting off while driving and the RPM gauge behaving erratically.

When a cylinder misfires, it can disrupt the engine's smooth operation and cause a loss of power. In some cases, it can be severe enough to stall the engine while driving. The erratic behavior of the RPM gauge could also be related to this misfire.
To address the issue, you should consider the following steps:

  1. Diagnose the Misfire: Confirm that the problem is indeed a misfire in cylinder 5. Use a scan tool to retrieve trouble codes and identify the specific issue causing the misfire. This could be related to ignition, fuel delivery, or other engine components.
  2. Check Spark Plugs and Ignition Components: Inspect and replace the spark plugs and ignition components, such as the ignition coil and spark plug wires, if they are worn or damaged.
  3. Check Fuel System: Ensure that the fuel injector for cylinder 5 is functioning correctly. It should provide the right amount of fuel to the cylinder.
  4. Examine Vacuum Leaks: Vacuum leaks can also cause misfires. Check for vacuum leaks in the intake manifold or vacuum hoses.
  5. Perform a Compression Test: Low compression in cylinder 5 could lead to a misfire. Perform a compression test to check the compression levels in all cylinders.
  6. Consider Other Sensors: Sometimes, faulty sensors like the crankshaft position sensor or camshaft position sensor can also cause misfires. These sensors help the engine's control module determine the correct timing for fuel injection and spark.
  7. Professional Diagnosis: If you're unable to identify and fix the issue on your own, it's advisable to seek the help of a qualified mechanic or technician. They can perform a comprehensive diagnostic check to pinpoint the problem accurately.
A misfire can lead to various engine performance issues and potentially dangerous situations, so it's essential to address it promptly. Ignoring a misfire can also cause damage to other engine components over time.

96 E250 300 ci Was running perfect then started missing Replaced vacuumed hoses, found 1 loose spark plug, and 3 that were finger tight. Replaced all 6 plugs.

If your 96 E250 300ci was running perfectly and then started missing and the code is indicating a miss fire in cylinders 1 and 2, there could be a few potential causes. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
  1. Check the ignition system: Make sure that the ignition system is functioning properly. Check the distributor cap, rotor, spark plug wires, and ignition coil for any signs of wear or damage.
  2. Check the fuel system: Make sure that the fuel system is functioning properly. Check the fuel filter, fuel pressure, and fuel injectors for any signs of wear or damage.
  3. Check the compression: A compression test can help to determine if the engine is getting enough compression to run properly. Low compression in cylinders 1 and 2 can cause the engine to miss fire.
  4. Check the vacuum lines: Make sure that the vacuum lines are properly connected and not leaking. Any vacuum leaks can cause the engine to run poorly and miss fire.
  5. Check the PCV valve: The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve can become clogged or malfunctioning and cause the engine to run poorly and miss fire.
  6. Check the EGR valve: The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve can become clogged or malfunctioning and cause the engine to run poorly and miss fire.
  7. Check the Engine Control Module: The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the ignition and fuel systems and if it's malfunctioning it can cause the engine to miss fire.
It's important to note that some of these steps may require special tools and knowledge of the vehicle's engine system, so it's best to take it to a professional mechanic to avoid causing more damage.
