My 2003 V70 makes a whiney noise when I turn the engine off, lasting about a minute or so. I noticed it also making that noise while I was driving... What could that be and what should I do?

This sounds like the bearing in the thermostatic cooling fan has worn possibly lift bonnet with car started keep hands out and look for a fan on the front of the radiator the are usually black plastic and are easily replaced and become noisy when worn hope this is helpful glenn....

The common cause would be the power steering pump, it is rather low on fluid due to a leak in the system or it is defective.

Whiney noise

Diagnosing a noise like this is nearly impossible over the internet, have a local shop look into this noise.

My volvo overheated on the highway and I didn't notice until the temp guage was pegging. Now, when I turn it over it makes kind of a really whiney turn over sound, and it doesn't sound like the engine is...

If it is a heater hose that is going to your firewall....then yes, that is giving you your hiss and yes....you NEED to replace this or you will sieze the motor up!

How can i be sure it is power steering

This noise is the power steering pump, it is very common on all Fords that use the Ford style round resovoir pump, make sure u have the system flushed out before u install the new pump or the ground up parts of the old pump will ruin the new one.

Volvo V70 xc AWD '98 - fuel filter change

Brandonlo168,

The fuel filter can be located under the carpeted cargo storage floor at the rear of the wagon. Remove the four 10mm bolts, remove the cover. You will then see a removeable plate to the right just behind the rear passenger seat. Fuel filter can be seen through hole in hole. Replaced from underneath wagon. Be sure to make sure lines are fully inserted onto filter. Check for leaks. No smoking, extinguisher handy. Note arrow on filter for correct fuel flow.

Rear diff noise

We have to be sure where the noise is coming from, a advise you or ask someone to do the following tests:
  1. jack your both your rear tires and make sure its stable. turn your tires either manually or by shifting gear into reverse and try listening to any humming or whiny sound or vibration not only from your rear differentials but also your transmisssion and independent transfer case.
  2. Be sure it secured and will not move and will not squish you under.
  3. also check on your rear propellers, differentials for excessive play
  4. If you determined where it is coming from, check on your gear oils.
My own assesment from what you have just told us, is I would also check on your clutch system, because whiney noise only exist when you are backing up the car. I hope you would pin point which part is causing the whiney noise to save you all the headache of having it repaired.
Comment after you determine where it is coming from.
Thanks for dropping by fixya

Volvo XC70, Grinding Noise

sounds like c/v axles (front drive shafts) they will make a clicking sound normally when turning sharp and accell at the same time at slow speeds / look at the axle boots and look for grease on the inside of the front wheels leaking out the axle boots
