Question about 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe

Rear ends locks when in reverse

Noticed in cold weather when car is cold when I go into reverse, rear end locks up. If I go into drive and just move for about 2 min, I can go into reverse with no problems. I changed rear fluid, still have the problem. I'm thinking something is wrong with clutches in limited slip. If I am going in the right direction what are my best options

Thanks for the info. I will check that next. I went to the dealer so I would get the proper oil, I wonder if that was a smart. I will let you know how it works out.

Yes, it definitly sounds like a fluid problem. However, did you know that there are different weights of rear end lube for different rear ends? I would advice going to the dealership and asking what weight they show for your rear end. You need to first copy the tag # off the rear end so that they can be sure which one you have.

1998 tranny problem. Feels like it is locked in forward gear even in reverse or nutral.no1 or 2 gears either. But every once in a while it works properly. What is the maybe solution?

A/t problems.
lets back up, (no pun)
the car moves forward in reverse on flat ground?
you need to stated the symptoms much more clear,.
pretend we cant drive it?
what does each location of the gear selector do.
what car do in each mode.

my wild guess (useless as cold beans) is the shift cable system is bad. (cable, and clips on ends)
all it takes is looking, at both ends,. to see if it really does shift. right.

Sounds as if the gears may be broken in the rear axle, the front axle will pull the car if in four wheel drive but when in 2 wheel drive only the rear axle pulls. Get the back tires off the ground and turn the rear end by the wheels. You may or may not hear any noise but if it is in park it you should feel some resistance if the gears are in good shape, will likely turn freely or lock up completely in spots if the gears are broken.

I have noticed a clunk type noise/feel in the rear end after taking off from a stop. Tonight a really bad grinding/clunking sound both in drive and reverse, ion gear or neutral. I've been reading...

if the diff is not leaking oil there should be no reason to be low. If you hear a noise in neutral with the truck not moving, its not in the rear end. it may be the trans or transfer case.

when you say you checked the rear end for problems and things appeared good did you check the rear end internally to see if there is a broken gear tooth or metal in the differential oil.i`ve one were this was the problem(a broken gear) that would get caught and stop the forward motion or make it hard to turn.i`ve also had it were the rear brakes were causing a forward motion problem like your having.the shoes were rotating so far when the drum was turning then apply and lock up until it was put in reverse.just some things to check out.if things were working good with the rear drive shaft removed and the problem starts with it in then the problem is in the back end some where as mentioned above.

Rear on a2004 astro van awd v-6 locks up when making turn's left or right.but does'nt do it when gowing forward or reverse.

Rear end is a lockup dif. This couples both wheels. It has clutches that allow inner and outer weels to turn at different speeds when going around corner, thus eliminating most tire scrub. If noise is coming from dif. change dif oil and redress clutches.Driving in a straight line with a lockup dif. would not normally be noticed, because both rear wheels are travelling at the same speed.

Rear wheels on 2000 super duty f250 skid in reverse only

I hate to say it but it sounds like you have a severe problem in the rear end. Here are a couple of things i would do. First pull off your tires and wheels. Of course you need to put the truck on jack stands and block the wheels for safety! Disconnect your rear drive line so you know nothing from front diff or trans could be affecting it. Next spin the brake rotors by hand and inspect them for severe damage. Go forwards and backwards. Also listen in your rear end for grinding or clunking noises and also excessive play front foward to reverse. And last drain your oil and put your finger up inside the housing as far as you can and feel for large pieces that should not be there. This should give you a good idea if it is in your braking sytem your rear end or wether you need to start looking at front diff. or the trans. If all is good on rear end do the same thing for front diff and inspect it as well. Make sure you pull front driveline off!

Rear end locked up

you will probably find damage in the differential. remove cover and inspect.on one of the bolts there should be a metal tag with numbers on it .dont lose. you will need to order gear set.
