  1. Remove the transmission oil drain screw and drain fluid.
  2. Tighten drain screw. Torque: 38 Nm (28 ft.lbs.)
  3. Remove the transmission overfill screw and fill transmission through overfill screw opening, using DEXRON III ATF. NOTE: Add transmission fluid until it flows out over the overfill screw opening.
  4. Let engine idle until a fluid temperature between 32°C (90°F) and 57°C (135°F) is reached.
  5. Add transmission fluid until it flows out over the overfill screw opening, then close the overfill screw. Torque: 38 Nm (28 ft.lbs.) NOTE: Check transmission fluid temperature with scan tool.

Chances are judging from what I've read about this transmission...
The fluid has probably never been changed unless you know it's been done.
My suspicion would be that the Torque Converter Lock-up Solenoid may be stuck in the "on" position causing your stall when you try to engage Drive.
This means the torque converter isn't allowing the slip you need to get into gear.
This may be a job for a transmission shop...
I hope this has helped.
Big Dan

Is there a reset button on a 95 isuzu rodeo

I just read a post about the reset sequence - "(depress accelerator slightly, start engine, run for three seconds, shut off for ten seconds, then restart) it went back to normal and has run fine for months."

Car has little acceleration after driving awhile

Hello julieta_barr: My name is Roger and I will help you. If this happens after the engine warms up and the engine runs fine cold. I would look at the catalytic converter as the problem. When the converter is damaged the engine can run great cold. As the engine warms up a bad converter will close off and choke the exhaust down. Top speed will drop off dramatically. I would also replace the fuel filter as this could cause a problem. The converter can be checked but you need the equipment to do it. Should you have any questions please just ask. I will be glad to answer them for you. Please rate the quality of the answer as this is how we know you received the correct answer. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
