Question about 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
Not battery or starter, both have been replaced. Every so often, car will fail to start similar to condition when car is in gear while turning the key. Moving gear selector around doesn't help. Only 'waiting' resolves it, where sometimes it will start after waiting 10 mins or more. Once in awhile it won't start after trying for weeks. I took it to a repair shop and they tried to reproduce the problem and after two weeks, it failed to manifest itself so I took the car back. A week later, it did it again in front of my home. I researched on my own and learned that during the early 90's GM implemented VATS and thought maybe my car was suffering from a bad resistor on the ignition key, causing the Anti-Theft device to kick in. I am tempted to take it into a different repair shop to bypass this device just to rule out this is as being the culprit. Naturally, the car won't misbehave while in the shop so it seems that I'll have to use a shotgun approach to address the problem, or end up being stranded repeatedly.
Buick lover has the best answer but, I bought a used 94 cutlass supreme. The security light was on every once in a while. One morning it didn't start. The previous owner Always used the same key. Upon inspection, the key was really worn. I used the spare key which looks to have never been used. No more security light issue and the car hasn't failed yet.

Check the Fuel Pump Relay. behind the battery next to the OVP Over Voltage Protection Relay. They do fail. Occasionally the engine will not start when hot. This becomes more frequent until you are left stranded. If you are comfortable with jumping two terminals you can jump terminals 7 & 8 test the relay. if the car starts your Fuel pump relay is bad.
