  • karbos33 Nov 22, 2008

Use the 3.8L diagram, it is the same engine, just punched out for the truck.

The link I provided shows the coil layout and is numbered, click the link, remember the 3.8 V6 is the same as the 4.2, exact same layout.

The 4.2 V6 and 3.8 V6 have the same firing order, I checked twice, they are the same engine block, they just increased the cubes for the truck, I suggest you look elsewhere for the miss, fuel injector, valve issue, coil pack, also run a quick test for codes. I am a retired Ford dealer tech so I am sure abut the info I am giving you, please change my rating from thanks for trying to helpful, I think that is the appropriate rating.

Hi,

For a Ford F150 with a 4.2 liter V6 engine, the firing order would be 1, 4, 2, 5, 3, 6. Below image would illustrate as adapted from here.

I changed my front 3 spark plugs and a broken wire now and i have very bad rough idle and i could hear clicks? whats going on? should I put the old ones back on? the new ones were bought from...

The spark plugs should be matched up with the old ones to be sure that are the same as the new spark plugs and that the threads are not too long or too short and if the spark plugs were pre-gapped or if they need to be gapped, and the auto part store should have given you that information along with any spark plug gap because some spark plugs you can not set the gap on or they will be damaged. The spark plug gap should also be printed on the emission label out under the hood. Also, the other three spark plugs and wires should be changed to complete the ignition tune-up.

The spark plug gap should be the same amount between all of the spark plugs, and the farther apart that the gap is between the spark plugs the rougher the engine will run and idle, and the closer that you get to the same spark plug gap between the spark plugs the smoother the engine will run and idle.

It is also very important that the spark plugs be connected to the correct terminals on the coil pack or the engine will have a severe mis-fire and it will set a mis-fire DTC (Data Trouble Code) and cause the check engine light to come on.

Here is a firing order diagram to help assist you and let me know if need help with this diagram or if you require any further assistance.

What is the wireing order for spark plugs in a 2000 ford windstar se. The front of vehicle has a short, medium, long wire. Where does each wire go in relation to the coil pack in rear of engine. Thank you!

The correct firing order diagram for that vehicle is not an easy task to come up with, but try this diagram and it should be the right firing order diagram for that vehicle. Let me know if this does not work out.

Firing Order diagram for 2006 Ford Explorer

Hope this helps. The ignition coil:
  • changes low-voltage pulses from the PCM to high-voltage pulses.
  • fires 2 spark plugs simultaneously.
  • has 3 transformers.
    • One transformer fires the spark plugs for cylinders 1 and 5
    • One transformer fires the spark plugs for cylinders 2 and 6
    • One transformer fires the spark plugs for cylinders 3 and 4
Spark plug wires:
  • carry high-voltage pulses from the ignition coil to the spark plugs.
The spark plugs:
  • change high-voltage pulses to spark at the gap, which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
The firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.

Firing order diagram

Here is the firing order diagram for that vehicle, and if the ignition wires are not crossed then one of the spark plugs might have been damaged while installing it and the spark plug gap closed on one of the spark plugs, or one of the ignition wires (spark plug wires) has been damaged, and if those wires are over 5 years old then you should replace them. I hope that this helps you to solve your problem.
