You will need to remove the rear diff cover. There is a small bolt that secures the pin that the spider gears ride on. remove this bolt, and then remove the pin(you might call it a shaft). Remove the caliper and rotor from the side you are replacing, and push the axle in. Inside the differential, you will see what we call a c-clip on the end of the axle shaft you just pushed in. Sometimes this clip if it is in the right position, will fall out on it's own. If not, slide it off, and go pull the axle out. Now you can pry out the seal and replace it. There will be a pipe plug with a square recess on the front side of the differential. You can put a 3/8 drive ratchet in the recess and unscrew it. This is the fill plug. You fill the rear end untill it runs back out of this hole. It will be located about half-way up from the bottom of the differential housing.
Jack the vehicle up and check the brake caliper. If it isn't a seal on the caliper make sure you check the shock absorber to make sure that isn't leaking. If that is not leaking it is most likely the axle seal. Unless Ford has changed the design of that your going to have to open the rear differential, remove the retaining clip for that axle and extract it from the Axle housing. The seal is typically pressed on so it is going to be a pain to remove the old seal then press the new seal in place and re-assemble the rear end. Make sure you fill the differential with the proper fluid or you'll burn the rear end out. When your checking the caliper make sure you check the brake line for breaks and the bleed valve to make sure that is in place and not leaking.
This is caused by a leaking rear axle seal you will need to pull the left rear axle out and change the seal and check for a worn axle bearing, this requires the removal of the differential cover, pin and center block or posi spring and clutch pack (if so equipped) and spider gears and then the "C" clip that retains the axle into the gear carrier, u will need a tube of silicone to reseal the cover and a axle seal installer tool and about 2 hours of your time
If what you see leaking is very oily and does not evaporate, likely it is an axle seal. If there are no leaks in the brake system, that's the only thing back there that can leak. If the axle bearing is going away, it can damage the seal so make sure you look for small shiny metal flakes behind the seal when you replace it or you will be doing the job again very soon. Can't remember...that IS rear wheel drive right?
To change the rear seal, yo will need to raise and support the rear of the vehicle. Remove the wheels and drums or rotors (depending on drum or disc brakes.) Remove the rear differential cover bolts and the cover (have a drain pan under the differential) You will likely need to turn the driveshaft so the center pin bolt is acessible at the back or the differential. This is a 5/16" (or 8mm) bolt that is on the right (passenger) side of the differential carrier assembly. I recommend a new bolt be installed here on reassembly. Once the retaining bolt is out, slide the center pin out enough to allow the axle shafts to be pushed in toward the center of the diff. to remove the "C" clips that retain the axle shafts in the carrier assembly. Be careful if you happen to pull the center pin all the way out not to allow the carrier assembly (has the ring gear mounted on it) to turn, as this can rotate the spider gears out of alignment causing a headache on reassembly. With the "C" clip removed the axle shaft can be pulled out of the diff. Inspect the bearing area of the shaft for rust, pitting, or scoring. Remove the old seal and carefully install the new one. Reverse proceedures to install. Take care to note the "C" clips and center pin bolt are properly reinstalled. Fill with 2.5 to 3 quarts of rear axle grease for you vehicle.
Not that difficult, raiseand support the rear of the truck and remove the wheels. Might as well replace both sides so you know you have new seals, remove the differential cover and drain the fluid. Once differential is opened and cleaned , remove the axle "C" clip that hold the axle in place and slide the axle out. Once the axle is out remove the wheel seal and clean around the area. This would be a good time to replace the wheel bearing too since you have access to them and there not that expensive. Install the new bearing and seal, note make sure you oiled the bearing and seal before installing it back and take care when installing the axle back in and "C: clip. Use RTV silicon gasket maker to seal the differential cover and wheels back on and lower. If your lazy like i am, you can drain the differential fluid and replace it with a 50/50 mix with gear oil and Lucas engine oil additives. That may stop the leak and get you a few more miles. You gear oil is 75W-90 and the capacity is 2.6 liters and 3.6 liters if you have the 11.50 Ring gear. Good luck and hope this helps.
Block the front tires. Break the rear lugs loose. Jack up the rear of the truck at the center if possible. remove the wheels & brake drums. Remove the brake shoes,return springs & all the other hardware. Remove the differential cover & drain oil. If you have a posi the next step sucks. You need to remove the threaded pin from the housing & remove the axle retaining clips. All the while,being carefull of the spring in the posi unit. If no posi,then same procedure,minus the "pucker factor". After the axle is out,take a large flat blade screw driver or pry bar & pop the seal out. Keep in mind the axle bearing is probably gone too , so that's another procedure. Keep it apart,you'll be glad you did.
Jack up vehicle and support on stands. Remove wheels. Remove differential cover . Locate and remove lock pin that holds cross shaft in. Slide cross shaft out. Push axle inward to release axle c clip. Remove axle and pry out old seal. Install new seal with proper tool.Add some lube to the seal lip to aid axle intallation. Revese removal procedure. This is for a "c" type axle.
Another type has 4 nuts attaching a retainer plate to the backing plate behind the axle flange. In this case the 4 nuts are removed and the axle will come out. This may require a little effort. I think that you have a "c" type axle in your vehicle. Hope this helps. Moe
if you need to change the axle seals here is the process. You need to remove the rear wheels. Remove the brake drums if so equipped. Remove the rear cover on the differential. Turn the differential until you find the bolt that holds the cross shaft in place. Remove the bolt and pull the cross shaft out. Then you will see the axle ends. Push the axle in towards the center of the axle. You will need to remove a C clip retainer from the axle end. You can then remove the axle and gain access to the seal. Repeat the process on the opposite side. Then reverse the disassembly process. Place the cover back onto the differential housing and refill the differential. Good luck.
