Question about 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee battery drainage (continued)

Mikey-
I found the circut. The circut has a 50 amp fuse (large) located under the hood. According to the owner's manual it it has the memory functions, power windows, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, and trailer towing on the circut. I suspect, as I said before it might have to do with the tailgate. The fact that the trailer towing is involved on the circut makes me think I am on the right path. Although, the vehicle did have an aftermarket alarm installed from a previous owner. After many problems with it I removed the wires that were attached to a few fuses. I might have screwed it up when I did that, but that happened about 2 years ago and the problem just started a few months ago... thanks again for your help. Please let me know what you think, thanks!

Thanks Mikey. I did do that, it seems to be the problem. I think the factory tow package was replaced by something aftermarket. I removed the tow package wiring, and in doing so I found that they had ran a positive cable from a large connector that was not attached to anything. (I suspect this was the factory tow package connector.) This is where I am getting a draw from. The problem now is that I'm not sure how to "turn it off." If I just cut the wire that wouldn't make a difference, right? The wire that is giving me the draw is pink with a black stripe. I can also follow it (I think) to the rear wiper motor in the tailgate. I'm also getting a draw from that connector. I know this is the problem because when I pull the fuse the draw stops. I'm thinking about installing a swtich either on the pink and black wire, or maybe on the whole circut. I could just ru wires from the fuse box under the hood, install the fuse along those wires, then also install a switch. This would mean I'd have to switch on and off the circut when I'm driving. It's not the best fix, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all your help.

If this jeep has a towing package, and it is a factory pakage, if I remember correctly, the left side rear inner panel by the tailgate has a module pack behind it. Disconnect it and test for draw again.

Battery drain, fuse #12 in 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

On the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee the # 15 fuse is the IOD circuit. (Ignition Off Drain) The # 12 fuse is the power windows. Both fuses are 50 amp.

This IOD fuse #15 powers the distribution box that contains the 50 amp fuse. Pull each fuse in the under hood.

Pull each fuse in the under dash. Check for on the passenger side floor is an additional fuse panel.

Before going to far suggest at night checking for any lights lit. The draw is about right for a small light bulb.

Typical draw for parked car is around 100 milliamps

Suggest that you disconnect power to the car for several minutes. Reconnect the battery. The object is to reset the body electronics module.

If the computers in the modules get a glitch they can cause a drain. By cycling the power, disconnecting battery, they will reset to factory settings. Reported it can take up to 20 minutes for the circuits to drain before you can reset!.

the following web site does a great job of explaining all that is going on. What appears to be simple to troubleshoot is not so easy. He comments about delay before sleep are important. Testing after overnight may result in a different drain rate. Make sure that your battery meets specifications. In 2000 the drain rate may be relatively high and the reserve capacity of your battery low.

If this is a Cherokee, review the Repair Manual XJ Cherokee

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder. You might want to check the Ignition Off Draw (IOD) fuse in the Electrical Power Distribution center located in the black box located just in front of the coolant fill container on the left side under the hood. This is a 40 amp fuse, orange in color and is the orange fuse closest to the firewall. This fuse is used to put the jeep in storage if you don't plan to drive it for a while. Which would stop the current flow and not allow your battery to die. GOOD LUCK!
