heater won't heat up while idling -- heats up almost instantly when i start driving it

  • myuglystik Feb 10, 2009

engine reaches correct tempature, both heater in van is blowing cold air and the hoses to the coil is not getting hot thought the fluid was low but have checked it several times and plenty in radator and good level in holding tank, have worked the heater valve back and forth does not seem to help, also the duct wok damper seems to the opening and closing. I was thinking the therostat might be sticking I have a new one to install, 195 degrees, the only thing that is funny is the control knob when turned to mix or to the windsheild position the AC wants to kick on when it should only be the heater. it seems to keep the ac off when blowing to the floor, and the ac works fine when in the ac positions, but is is my thought that the heated coolent is not getting to the heater coils, but not sure of what is stopping it. cool has a good greenish tint to it and is not rusty or anything like that, thanks

To the first person:
I would need more details such as: are both heater core hoses warm or just one? Does it have a thermostat jammed in the open position? Does the temperature gauge show that the engine is at the correct temperature?

To the second person:
You might be low on antifreeze, or your thermostat could be the wrong temperature (example: 195* is normal, and 160* is too low.

Where is the thermastate on my 97 ford areostar van?

No the cooling system would not have any affect on the battery.
If the engine is not warming up, the thermostat is in the water outlet where the upper radiator hose connects to the intake.

My 1995 ford areostar van when heat is on only blows cold air

The aerostar has a vacuum operated watervalve in the heater tubing.the valve is located on the
passenger side inner fender behind the aircleaner.with someone operating the controls inside the van
you can check to see if you get vaccum by removing the tiny hose that goes to the water valve
and checking for suction as you in the van person operates the heater conthttp://www.fixya.com/PostAnswer.aspx?thid=1323651&prdid=696348rols. If you have no
vaccum there is a break in the hose between the intake manifold and the valve. If you do get
vaccum check to see if the valve changes position from vaccum on to vaccum off. you can see
this motion on the small lever on the side of the valve. If the valve lever doesn't move you can
move it manually to allow the water to flow through the heater core. if the valve won't move manually
there is an obstruction in the valve. If it does move manually the vaccum diaphragm is gone.
replace the valve. if it moves to the manual open position you can hold it open with a tywrap.
before you get to this point you should first check to see that there is enough coolant in the
radiator. If you still have no heat you can check the coolant flow through the heater core. to do
this remove both heater hoses from the valve and pump water from a hose into one of the hoses
water should flow from the other hose. If it doesn't the heater core is blocked. The rear heater
operates the same way with the watervalve under the van just behind the drivers seat.
Good luck.
