Re: Jaguar 2002 3.0 X-Type. Turn the key and hear...
Mine use to do that and all it was, was the automatic shift stick was move about 1/8inch outa its park position. If infact it was bumped just a slight bit ur car will not start. This may or may not be your problem. If this happens periodic then good chance that is what it is. If it happend.....and wont start at all then it could be somthing I'm not aware of at this moment .

check your connections. turn the key to the on position and leave it sit for a minute or so then turn it off and try again. could be a security key issue. try a different key if you have one. you could also have a bad starter if none of this helps
If the starter is rapidly clicking when you turn the key, then it is insufficient battery current. You may enough power to power the lights, but not enough to keep the starter engaged. Try connecting a jumper. If a relay is clicking, you will need hands-on professional diagnosis
jump start vehicle with commercial grade leads and see what happens,,might just need a new battery sounds like its low and has no reserve amperage although a volt check will show ok,or test it with a proper discharge gauge to see if a cell has packed up.
Inertia switch located on the passengers side (under the dash). You may need to remove a small door to get access to it. If you have not been in an accident, then it was probably tripped accidentally. Simply press the button, and it will reset. This should get your car running again. Good Luck!
Had a similar problem with my x type 2.5 petrol, only had the car 1 day went to start it nothing happend all the lights came up on the dash but the engine wouldn't start and the immobiliser light stayed on. Spoke to Jaguar they had no idea and I couldn't get it to them. After disconnecting the battery trying to reset the immobiliser phoned and auto locksmith they came out and discovered the end of the key with the blade had lost it's coding and the immobiliser was not disarming, they reprogrammed the key and the car started no problem. As far as i know there is no way past the immobiliser. Hope this helps.
