'04 Explorer, heat/AC switching seems to be common problem...
Wiz - I have this problem and after looking it up on the net and asking some friends - with final confirmation coming here from you - it would seem be the blend door or the actuator.
Problem is, I can't do anything with cars so I brought it back to the dealer where I got it (bought it used a year ago). Still waiting on them to get back to me.
My question is this: how much do you think they'll charge me to repair it? Or at least what's a good price and what's a bad price?

what was replaced?? to fix your issue??need more info. I have 04 max my self and very common issue is the low side ac line leaking. you need to look at the front of the ac compressor if the whole thing is spinning with ac on. if the whole clutch is not turning and the pulley ONLY is, than the ac is not turning on and it could be several things. anything from low charge, to low side pressre switch issue, or major leak somewhere.
Yes I have an 04 explorer it is a little tricky to get to. You have to check it close, more than likely it is the plastic housing replace it and the thermostat now. It seems to be a common problem and like I said a little tight to get too. But I did mine in the carquest parking lot. Here is a youtube video I found. Replacing Thermostat Housing in 02 Ford Explorer V6 4 0L upper and...
Your ac blend door is broken or the actuator that opens and closes the door is broken. The ac blend door moves up and down to direct air flow through the heater core(for heating) or evaporator core(for cooling).
When the door mechanism breaks, the blend door falls down and you will only have ac but no heating.
You can buy a ac blend door kit for your explorer, they cost about $120 on ebay or other places. search for Explorer ac blend door kit.
The duct is under the the dash on the drivers side. And you will have to cut open the duct to install the replacement door.
could be a problem with the blend door. common on explorers. open glove box all the way down (bend in tabs to where it will open further than normal) . take flashlight and look behind it to top of black box inside dash. should be able to see tab for door moving while changing the temp. on the control unit. if it is broken should be able to hear cracking or popping from inside heater case.
Don't know about an Escort but on many vehicals, that is normal. Take a look at a friends car and see for yourself. Some cars have two fans. One is controlled by the temp sensor and the other comes on imediately when the AC is turned on. The reason it happens with the heat as well as the AC, is that when you turn the heat on, the AC compressor comes on in order to dry the hot air so that your windows don't fog. It sounds like crazy talk I know but like I said, check it out on a friends car and see for yourself.
switch prolly not bad but you might wanna look into your heater control valve. valve not closing and letting the hot coolant fill your heat exchanger rather than recycling it back to the cooling system. The heat is over powering your a/c system and you're only getting a bit of cooling when you have the a/c on max. try it out
