Question about 2002 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

Transmission Wife drove about 30 mins, said it did some jerking while driving, arrived at destination and parked it. Came out 15 mins later and wouldn't move. She's right. I can't get anything, Drive or Reverse, Reverse makes a little bit of whining noise. Reved up, nothing. Fluid perfect level. Put some anti-slip stuff, nothing. Tried to push it in neutral, if engine is running, acts like it's in Park, had to kill it so I could push it. Wierd that she drove it to the spot, and then it won't move again. Is this a solenoid or linkage or something? Thanks for any info.

Possibly an electric shift solenoid, or at least a bad connection at it. If you have some experience, you can try removing the harness's from solenoid packs etc, at transmission and spray them good with a penetrating spray to clean them up, but be sure to blow them out after, or at least spray with contact cleaner prior to re-assembling. If your not experienced, it may be wise to get it towed to dealer for a scan, or a reputable transmission repair place, hopefully to fix it before too much damage is done. Quite often dirty connectors are the cause, but no gaurantee's. What's mileage & when was fluid & filter last changed?

You did make sure that mopar ATF3 or 4 from chrysler went back into that transmission right? Using any other transmission oil in those chrysler transmissions, except chrysler/mopar ATF3 or 4 has been known to cause many a transmission to act up, believe it or not. Not saying you still won't need a scan, but it's been reported many times where transmissions acted up with non-mopar fluid & was cured when changed back to mopar.

intermittents are sometimes hard to diagnose out !! and this seems as one , im curious though what made them wiggle the relays and fuses ?? was there a previous problem there ?? depending on year of manufacture of car , is weather or not the cars own pcu can help diagnose what made car stop , as later models "remember " what there last condition was that shut off engine , of course this requires diagnostic equipment to see this info that typically car owners don't own , but a qualified service tech does and knows how to use it to find your problem

Sorry, but it is recommended to go to a service and make a diagnose. Seems that the automatic transmission has a fault.

Did the old battery need replacing , and or did the same thing ???? If yes then maybe its your altenator , take it up to auto zone and have it tested free of charge!!!! and if its good get a second opinion from another mechanic, or take out your amp and subwoofers =)

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.
