About half a foot of water was in the floor pans. the alarm went of til the battery died now it wont start. i left it for about 3 days and everything else works, but it just makes a ticking noise when i try turn it over. I think its the emobelizer.. not sure but.. Just funny that everything else works but wont start.. it started on the night cause i parked it out of the flood waters..

You can't turn immobilizers off. If they are faulty, you have to fix them. The ticking is the fuel pump. Sounds like your battery is flat. When the battery is fully flat, the alarm system has to be reset. To do this the key has to be in the ignition when you start to charge. What I would suggest you do is charge the battery fully using a battery charger. Disconnect the battery overnight. Put the key in the ignition but not turned and then connect the battery. Wait 15 minutes for the system to reset. If it still does it, I suspect the starter or solenoid are damaged.

If it just clicks then i would suspect the battery is dead. Try to jump the battery.

SOURCE: drive through flood

Start in the rear; test the battery first; then if all is well turn the key to the '0' key position and test all compotents that should work if all is good there, turn to try to start, if not nothing clicks or turns over then remove the starter and bench test it or take it to Auto Zone...if you have time, check the oil stick for water..Just go ahead and change the oils after you remove the spark plugs...never crank a engine that may have sucked water thru the air filter!!!

SOURCE: Shifter stuck in park!

you have to take off the plastic all around the gear shifter. You can wedge a screw driver carefully around the edges and pry the plastic off then there is a screw on the shifter take that off and slide the top off and then take off the rubber until the whole shifter is exposed then you will see in the cavity on the right side a little metal round tab on a spring that you have to push in with a screw driver and it will release the shifter. Good luck

SOURCE: 1999 bmw 540i automatically shuts off

It sound dumb, but check if both battery posts are OK. Pull on both of them one after the other to make sure they wont budge at all. Cause i had this problem once where the negative post had broken, but inside the battery where the post and the plates that make up the battery's cells become one. But since the post was still sitting in the battery, it touched just enough to give the car juice to start and all, but when i hit a big enough bump, the post jumped up so the car had no more ground, and with no ground to work with, the spark plugs can't make any fire so the engine dies apparently for no reason. So even if it sound weird or dumb, check that out first cause it would be the thing that makes you search the longest. If everything regarding the battery is fine, then i'm guessing a problem with a body ground or grounding strap somewhere. Might either be the grounds regarding the engine that give it the possibility to fire and such, or might be the grounds and/or fuses and connectors that make the car's onboard computer work.

Hi i got problem with my bmw e39 540 i auto .when engine warm it changes gear late and got a whisle noise .it only does when engine warmed and if i turn engine of and wait for 20 min or less it gets normal...

Look for vacuum leaks, late shifting can be a result of lower than normal manifold vacuum, look for dislodged or broken hoses.

My thought is when you find the whistling, you will have the solution...

Car drivin through flood

What do I think the problem is. The driver is a moron.

How many computers do you think your car has? And you think they're water compatible? Tell your dad you saw advertising for a boat and then the bmw commercial came on and you got them confused.

Just for a quick test. put your laptop and desktop computer in the full bathtub, toss in your cell phone and see which one works after they dry out.

Then think to yourself how much time AND money you saved by trying to float the 540.

If you're lucky you liquid locked the motor and nothing else. this is where water from the flood seeps back in through the pistons from the exhaust and you try to crank start it and totally ruin the engine block by trying to compress liquid.

You car is a giant paper weight.
