MY 2003 honda accord makes a loud wining noise . I check the fluid it was full what could be wrong ?

I have the same very loud whining noise occuring when turning the wheel any direction. When idling with the hood open I hear what looks to be a loud belt but and I believe it's the timing belt not the drive belt... My car died while pulling into a parking lot and I have not been able to restart it. The battery is new and it wants to turn but will not start. It's currently at a garage and they've not diagnosed it yet. Any ideas what I'm in for?

Hi,

Initially, your described concern could be the belt. It may already be loose requiring tightening/adjustment or perhaps even replacement. In some instances, it could also indicate that the power steering pump is having difficulty turning the wheels for some reason, say tire pressure in front too low.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

2003 honda accord 2.4 power stering hard, replace pump got little softer but still hard

The steering is controlled by the steering rack,
& they get stiff because no one changes the fluid
every 3 years

The upper strut bearings fail & make steering stiff

Doubt the pump was a problem at all

2003 accord V6 power steering noise when cold, stops when warmed up?

Try to get a power steering fluid flush, there may be contaminants in the fluid
Make sure someone has not put the wrong fluid in the vehicle.
If the problem started after the fluid had been low there may be damage to the pump

Steering Wheel noise on cold start

this is either a loose belt, or low power steering fluid. Remember that Honda uses a diffrent power steering fluid from everyone else. Make sure it is a Honda compatable fluid, or you will get leaks.

Power steering pump

Yes in most cases the pump rotor vanes cause this noise, there are additives that can help like one made by Lucas Oil, but if it is really whinning then that will be a watse of money, if you end up putting on a rebuilt pump make sure to flush all the old fluid out or the pump you just spent your hard earned money on will get noisey to.

Noise when I turn my steering wheel.

If there is fluid in the pump and it makes noise, that may indicate that the pump is going bad. Some PS pumps just make noise. Ford pumps, for example make a lot of noise, and there is nothing wrong with them. If it's a squeal, it might mean the bearings in the pump are going bad.
