Open the rear hatch. There are two screws towards the inside. Unscrew these and remove the housing.Turn the bulb holder 1/8 turn counterclockwise and pull out. Push in on the bulb and turn it counterclockwise, then pull the bulb out of the holder. Replacement is exact reverse of removal.

I had this problem with my 2007 Honda CRV -- all the lights worked EXCEPT the tail/running lights and the license plate light. The other tail lights worked -- brake, reverse, indicators, and hazards. Front headlights also worked, but when the headlights went on the back tail lights did not (not to safe for driving at night!!) The fuse was #15 in the interior fuse box (under the dash driver side) with the label "small exterior lights" ( also check fuse #19 labeled "small lights main"). The cause of my problem, I believe, is a bad or lose wire in my license plate light.
check for loose negative wire on battery terminal, tighten if loose,
check your ignition switch, the accesories wire (positive) if loose/ re-connect it.
check for loose accesories harness wire- repair if nescessary.
Have you checked the fuse for the tail lights which should be located on the side of the dash behind an access panel on either the drivers side or passengers side. If you open the door you should see the panel.
Open the back door, observe the tail light lenses if no screws on the outside. Then there must be an access panel or fasteners on the inside possibly hidden by the trim or carpet. You also need to get the right bulb for your make and model. you can find this in your owners manual. It should also tell u how to replace it.
Pretty simple just remove the light fixture then you just have to remove the bulbs from the fixture and wire assembly remains intact then just fit the same bulbs in to the new light fixture without removing the wire assembly.
