Trunk won't open on a 1998 Volkswagen Cabrio

Key will go in and turn but nothing happens. I can't get the seats down to get in that way. Can I take the seats out or cut something out to get in? What is the best cheapest easiest way to get into the trunk? Please help.

Oh and the top is stuck up because I can't get into the trunk to release the hydraulic pressure.

The best thing to do is remove the back seat, both the cushion and the seat back, you can get in the trunk that way, I think there is a link rod form the key cylinder to the latch for the trunk, once you crawl through the opening behind the rear seat back cushion you will have no problem getting the trunk open.

Check the release solenoid for power, open the trunk and have someone press the remote release button, does it make a kind of clunk noise at the latch area? If not check the fuses and the power to the release solenoid in the trunk.

First of all the roof is not even soppose to operate while the trunk is open - So there is the first problem Ive been involved with BMW's for a long time and this is the first Ive heard of a roof opening while the trunk is open. There is a built in feature that tells the car not to open the roof if the trunk is open and the other way roung while the roog lid is open the trunk cant open.
The reason the roof is not working anymore as soon as there is stress on the roof the electric motors(One operates the roof and the other operates the roof lid) disengages, You said that the roof still worked but the lid did not so probably only the one motor disengaged. So what you have to do is open the trunk on the left hand side right behind the tail light pull away the material and simply just push the electric motor into place. that should fix your problem.

It may happen that the two motors have become out of sync, Disengage both electric motors manualy put the roof away engage the motors and that should put the roof and lid back into sync.

No locksmith,

go to a mechanic or do it yourself with the manual.

You need to remove the back seats, then there should be a panel, you get into the boot and unlock the latch from inside.

At least it was like that on the golf cabrio, the beetle should be the same.

Hi,

Offhand, would think that the mechanism is stuck, corroded or the lubrication has dried. You could try asking the assistance of a friend who would push on top of the trunk while turning the key. Additionally, you could try spraying the keyhole with WD40. When turning the key, try to do it slowly, as if trying to make it catch/latch on to something.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Have a locksmith look at it. You dont want ruin your car to get into the trunk. You should be able to get a quote before he does the work to ensure the cost is not outragious.

Key will not turn in ignition

I have occasionally had the problem where the key won't turn. It usually happens when the steering wheel lock mechanism prevents wheel from turning enough to allow the key to turn. It sounds like a similar issue for you. Perhaps something is not aligned properly when they re-installed the wheel. I'd take it back to the shop that serviced the steering wheel and explain the problem.

Possible electrical problem?

Diagnosing something from a description is far from an exact science, but this is what it sounds like to me may have happened. If your battery was not tie down it could have gotten against something hot or moving (like a pulley), or what ever was rattling may have created a spark somehow and caused the battery to exploded, either way the battery fluid spashing onto hot metal could explain the cloud of white smoke, as you did not mention seeing any flames.

Trunk won't open

Lower the back seat and crawl into the trunk and see what the latch is doing when you activate the key fob. the trunk lid will have to be open to enable any repairs. Also an emergency release cable is probably visible (yellow handle) inside the trunk and will Open the trunk lid.

Cant open the trunk

you can get in the trunk by removing the back seats. pull up on the plastic tabs by the head rests and the seats will fall forward. then you can get in and see what's happening from the inside.

'91 LS400, trunk will not open. key will not turn, electric latch switch clicks but won't open. valet lock in open position. Tried 1) disconnect battery, reconnect battery, use switch, push down on...

If you hear the sound of the electric latch switch, then it's working but stuck somehow. Just put the key in the switch and turn it to the right and then pull up the trunk or ask someone to help you. it will open. I tried it today and it opened with me. It was stuck from inside by some kind of a broken plastic pieces. Just removed it and now it's working fine. good luck

Im installing a distributor on my truck, distributor wont go down aldaway down,i got truck on tdc but still doing something wrong, thank you

make sure cylinder #1 is top dead center. Install your dist so that the rotor is pointing straight foreword then it should fully seat, if you are still having problems then you may have to turn the engine by hand back and forth a little until it seats. Good Luck Tim
