I have a 1992 Fleetwood Bounder Motor Home with a 1991 Ford F530F Chassis and a 7.5L V-8
The red lite for the battery goes on ,but it is still charging.
The owner thinks it is ''supposed to go on''
What is the output on the alternator supposed to be? I need a chassis book, can't find one, where should i get it?
Dear Sir/Madam,
did you plug the voltmeter on the battery when the car was off or while it was running...?
Also Did you test the cables with the cables off and see what the output
voltage is? The battery by it self should not be at 15 volts. If all is well
there then i would take the alternator to be tested you might have some
bad internal parts. Your voltage regulator might not be working right
either.
Thanks
good luck
There are several things to check for. Check the battery terminals. And there should be a wire from the positive terminal (+) directly to the alternator. There can be a fusible link. A fusible link is kind a fuse embebeded into the wire, in some point the wire gets thick.
The battery light is not supposed to come on, your neighbour is wrong.
It is either a faulty battery or an alternator problem.
The first thing you need to try is a replacement battery.
A new battery is not expensive, and you can always keep the old one as spares.
If you still get the red light with a new battery (this will come on after a while), then check the alternator.
Check that the serpentine belt that spin the alternator is in good condition, not covered in oil, and well in tension.
To put the belt in tension you usually have to push a tensioner pulley.
If the belt does not look too new is better to replace it.
To do the repair you can refer to the haynes manual fo your car, order it from haynes.
