CCA is not as important as standby amp hours in your location. The bigger the battery the better when dealing with large vehicals with a lot of electrical demand.

How long can i drive on fully charged battery and bad alternator?

Hi Stephanie!

I'm going to assume that your vehicle has an electric fuel pump, daytime running lights etc.

With the same alternator problem, with all other electrical devices (heater fan, radio and so on turned OFF) I found out that my Escape would only give me 20-25 minutes. Fortunately, I had a deep-cycle battery from my boat in the vehicle at the time and was able to make it the rest of the way home after swapping them out.

Hope this helps.

How do I replace my alternator in my 2005 GMC truck

It is more than likely an alternator problem. Charge the battery and drive to an auto parts store, and they can check the alternator on the vehicle for free.

96 Dodge Ram 1500, V8, 5.9L- Replaced alternator and battery, but battery drains within minutes of removing jumper cales

Disconnect the battery cables and inspect for contact corrosion, if present the alternator is not charging the car's battery because of a poor electrical cable connection. Next mix a solution of one part baking soda to three parts tap water and pour over both the cables and the battery contacts, allow the baking soda to dissolve the corrosion, once the fizzing has stopped, pour more tap water to clean remaining corrosion, dry with a paper towel and reconnect cables tightly to the battery.

How many accessories do you have plugged into the power ports? Do you have a lot of stereo equipment in the vehicle? Do you only make short trips with the vehicle? Too much load on the system from accessories (Cell phones, computers, GPS receivers, stereo equipment etc.) will cause batteries to drain. An alternator will provide enough power to run all of the stock electrical load and maintain a charge on the batteries. However, if the electrical load is greater than the alternators output, power is drawn from the batteries as well. Combine that with constant short trips and the batteries will never have a chance to be recharged.

I have two batteries in my 76 gmc cutaway motorhome does the second battery need to be a deep cycle?

Although it has been awhile since I've worked at an RV dealership, I seem to remember that the battery that actually powers the vehicle is usually a standard type battery (usually high amp). The secondary battery is usually a deep cycle. Check with the dealer to make sure. Always use the correct batteries in this application.

It sounds like your stereo is drawing more power than your alternator can put out. You can upgrade to a larger alternator. I believe you can still get a 100amp alternator for a GM. The other thing to do would be to put a capacitor into the system. Talk to some stereo guys but I know you can get them on e-bay for decent prices. Hope this helps.

No this is not safe to continue to operate. The computer in these vehicles generally requires about 10 volts to operate as they should.

Under powering them can spike them and cost you an ECM.

This constant draw on your battery is also not good for it. After about 4-5 cycles of charging and driving you will find the battery coming back for more; less and less. Automotive batteries are not designed to withstand complete drain and repeat charging like deep cycle batteries and will fail in a short period of time in these drain/recharge cycles.

I would not operate this vehicle under anything less than an emergency situation.
