Hesitating my 85 monte carlo is hesitating to start but will not fire off and i dont think it would be my timing belt because it shut off on me in the middle of the road

Is it a 305cid? sounds like the coil on top of the distributor or the module inside might need replacing.

I would first try a new fuel filter.
Look at the spray pattern of the injector(s) when the engine is cranking. If it is a fine mist cone spray pattern, that is good. If it drips, doesn't really spray down and out, the injector may be clogged-or partly stuck open with trash or debris.
If filter is good and injector spray looks good, just possible an ignition problem-check the pick up coil inside the distributor. The PCM receives this information to determine the timing of the spark.
