The problem is most likely on the transmission range selector switch, this is on th top of the transmission and has a multi-wire connector going to it, a shaft goes through it and the trans shift cable is connected there.

SOURCE: saturn ion fuel pump
Misnikie32 . .. I just had the same problem around the time you figured out your problem and I just got it fixed yesterday. For almost 3 weeks I had starting problems and I constantly smelled gas. The problem is a safety issue and the car needs to be recalled. The hose that is connected to the fuel pump is cracked. Since the hose is incorporated with the fuel pump, the entire mechanism needs to be changed. Look at spending about 700.00 . I informed saturn and told them my life was at danger. Please contact them on their website and goto your state's attorney general and launch a complaint, as well as the office of defective investigations and the NTSAB (google them). This needs to be brought to their attention and all owners of this car. I googled this and many other people are having this problem. Some are even on this forum. PLEASE DO THIS ! ! ! !

well this is how i do it,,,,ive done it over 300 times and never had a issue this way,,,,with the car off, remove the big drain plug on the bottom of the trans,,its either a 24mm or 27mm,let it all run out,,it will most likely be black,,then put the plug in and dump 8 quarts in or 2 gallons,,,,let it run and run it thru the gears,,,put in park and remove the smaller allen head screw inside the big drain plug,i think its a 5mm allen and let it run out of there til its not a steady stream anymore, then put the plug back in and clean off the drain plug area,,put 1 quart in the car and youre done,,,,,,the fill; cap is a screw on black cap near the back top of the drivers side down under there,,,,remember this takes CVT VTI fluid ONLY,,its light green in color DO NOT use RED ATF,,,,
