Question about 1996 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

Transmission problems My 1996 ford windstar has a transmission problem. I just had the transmission rebuilt about 1 month ago. It ran great the first week and know it seems to be slipping and it does not go into 2nd gear. Sometimes it works good but then sometimes it doesn't. Today I took off on the road slowly and it took 2nd gear then all of a sudden it started slipping when I increased the speed to 40 miles per hour. IT sometimes also will start shaking from the front side of the van. Sometimes it works great. What could it be?

I would take it back to the rebuilder. Perhaps it just requires adjustmnet.

Why is my 1998 Ford Windstar 98 reading DTC P0743?

#1) Low or dirty transmission fluid #2) Wire/circuit issue shorted to power or ground #3) Failed torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid #4) Failed TCC assembly in the torque converter.....

Since Transmission has been rebuilt I would strongly suspect the TCC solenoid and/or its wiring...When transmission was rebuilt did the TCC get replaced? If so, due to being intermittent, Check the TCC plug (both female and male) for bent or dirty contacts...also insure you have close to zero ohms of resistance from negative battery post to transmission case...A poor ground will cause a problem and be at times...saailer

Transmission shifts down abruptly when accelerating.

It most likely is a transmission issue, a internal issue inside the transmission.

96 Ford Windstar, 144K miles. O/D light is flashing after car runs for 2-3 minutes. Hard thunk from P to D but not from 2 to D or 1 to D. All gears shift smooth while driving. Rec'd code P1748 - Trans...

Yes. Having owned a trans shop, varnished means burnt clutches. Pull it and have it rebuilt. Your looking at ,at least $1800.00. No one rebuilds a transaxle for a thousand dollars. Not even if you pull it and carry it in.

if the light is flashing it most like hasly some sort of misfire or converter failure, p0171 and p0174 is lean bank 1 and 2, replace you upper and lower plenum gaskets, while they have they off have they replace your ignition coil, plugs and wires, windstars are known for 2 things, lean codes,(plenum gaskets) misfire(bad ignition coil)

There are no guarantees when it comes to a rebuilt transmission or anything. They usually have a warranty for the work all depending on the mileage afterwards. Is it over it? Most likely the gaskets need replacing and the bolts tightened again.
