Question about 1992 Honda Accord
When driving if u slow down loses power coughs and splats but when engine light comes on its fine
Ok that is normal when the light comes on the car goes into fail safe and no sensors are controling fuel managment its all predetermined by the pcm and its software programing. The stalling i have seen many many 92 acc. Remove egr valve and check the intake is not solid pluged with carbon causing back pressre popping the egr on on decel. If it is plugged clean it good or replace intake manifold.

Humm, so just before the check engine light comes on you get driveability issues. Well, sensors on the vehicle tell the fuel injection computer what the best conditions are for driving at any given time. A check engine light coming on indicates a failure of one of those "criticle" sensors that the engine really needs to run right with no problems. Honda and other manufactires engineered a "limp home mode" for certian sensor by "estimating" what the value of what that sensor should be so it will run ok, and then also turns on the light at the same time..... However, it only goes into back up mode when it knows there is a problem. There's s "wait and see" period by design (to prevent false codes) before it will turn on the light and go into back up mode thus turning on the light. During this waiting period (which only may be a few seconds or longer ) you notice bad driving conditions before back up mode.
Hoped this helped you.

Most likely the o2 sensor. I had the same problem. You can check it easily by unplugging the sensor and see if the problem persists. It is located on the top of the exhaust pipe directly before the catalytic converter. It sticks up a bit, with a few wires coming out the top, and the plug is right there.
