BMW 328i 97 top will not go down , weird thumping sound

I had put the top down and then i put it back it up, went all the way and locked and so did the windows, then al of a sudden a weird thumbing , knocking noise was coming from the the rear drivers side in the trunk. The noise stopped after about 20 seconds. I went to the trunk and found the noise by pulling the carpet away from the side. I saw the motor and 2 cables. the furthest one away was slack and the one closest to me was tight! The cable that was tight was going back in forth quite quickly creating the knocking noise. Was like it was puling something but couldnt do it. Just going back and forth quite quickly. The top no longer goes down but makes that noise when you press the convertible button, which also blinks non stop now aswell. I think i pretty much covered everything. I can try and put up pictures, if it will help or video. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks alot

1st Scenario
The noise you are decribing can be from the driving gear from one of the electric motors could be worn down in which case you will have to get it replaced the best place to get a cheap second hand one is at a scrap yard.

2nd Scenario
If the trunk still wont open then the loose cable you are describing has snapped you will know witch cable because if the roof lid is open check for a button on one of the right lid catch which tells the car the roof lid is now closed and secure so the trunk is now allowd to open. If this is the case replace the cable.

To alastair bda if this does not solve your problem I have sent you an e-mail with further questions to investigate your noise problem. I will be waiting on your reply.

I don,t understand how roof hit something in back seat
If roof is down you need to use special tool located end of driver side dash
Flip of plastic cover to see tool
Check owner manual how to use
The tool will locate between rear seat, this will close and lock rear cover
Make sure both sides of rear cover lock, get friend to press down
Once rear cover is locked down, remove tool, and check opperation
Make sure doors shut and windows down

Hi I have the same problem on my 1999 Carrea, I had the windows at the rear stuck down and the roof latch keeps open and closing, I have not solved this yet it could be a relay but it all started when I was opening and closing on the keypad, if you get the roof up and cant get the rear windows to close get the roof closed to a locking position and where the hood lock pulls back at the roof lock station slide a thin s crew driver up the side of the lock hook they close then, also a tip, if you stick your little finger in the hole where the hood lock goes and press both the rear window buttons up they close when the roof is down. if anyone knows why my hood wont lock please let me know

It may very well be the motor. It is the most common problem, as they fail, even though they might work occasionally. You need to try all switches, and realistically see if the switches pass power through to the window motor.
