Bussmann Flasher for Saturn

Hi emissionwiz,
My 2002 Saturn L100 has a problem on the turn signal. Is the flasher shared with the hazard light? The hazard light works but the signal doesn't. Is it possible? The flasher (as you suggested Bussmann 761) has 3 prongs, I guess part of the circuit is not functioning. Is the flasher installed behind the hazard light switch, where the clicking sound comes?

    From the following link:

    http://www.bussmann.com/6/Flashers.html

The Bussmann 761 is a 3-terminal flasher. I read from emissionwiz's response to a 1996 Saturn SL's similar problem, he suggested this flasher and I found that it is the same part for 2002 L100 from a part search. I noticed that some vehicles only have one "combined" flasher for hazard and turn signals, so I figured out my one is a combined one due to the source of clicking sound.

As I mentioned the signal works sometime after a 30 Min's drive, when it happens, a strange noice sounds (like a shorting of two poles of a small current electric source - sparks cannot be seen) and sustains for 5 seconds to a couple minutes provided the signal switch (the one with a lever) is turned and kept at a turning position.

My Saturn has more problems (they do not bother me too much) on the panel:

    • The "security" light flashing, comes and goes but never cut the gas off,

    • Temp gauge, fuel tank gauge and headlight being shut off (arms of gauges turn left to zero) in a split of second while driving, it happens 4-5 times in a minute or does not happen in a day,

    • The electronic odometer keeps going back...eg. started with 12300, dropped back to 12300 after reaching 12309. It gets about 20 miles after 100. When it drops back, usually combined with the happening of problem 2 - gauges and headlights problem.

A dealer did a primary check (0.5 hours charged) and found nothing, suggested to take an investigation of uncertain hours and will be on me. Thanks for you patient Mr. emissionwiz.

It makes sense to me. Is the hazard switch mounted behind the button with the triangle symbol where the clicking noise comes? Is it a DIY job? Just don'y know how to start in taking down the panel, I'm worrying that I will break the grill if it was snapped-on since the positions of the hooks are not clear. I guess the problematic BCM is the culprit for all the glitches too and I think it will cast me at least $600 to fix it. Will see how long can I tolerate.

    Thanks

The flashers are timed thru the hazzard switch. The hazzard switchneeds replaced. As for your other problems, has to be a body control module. The dealer will need to program this peice, as it holds the miles.

Turn lights blink with hazards but not with turn signal..flasher replaced. is It the multifunction lever then??

There should be a turn signal flasher and a hazard flasher. They are two different parts. If you replaced the hazard flasher and not the turn signal flasher than I would start by replacing the turn signal flasher.

One thing you can do once you find the turn signal flasher is to unplug it and use a jumper wire between the two pins of the connector then turn the key to the run position and place the turn signal lever in the left or right position. If the turn signal lights know light up than the turn signal flasher is the problem

I think the flasher light and the actual turn signal light are two different lights..take the flasher bulb out and put it in the place of your turn signal light and see if that works..hope that fixes your prob

How to change flasher unit 0n 2002 Saturn L-series

WARNING The flasher unit for turn signals should not be switched with a flasher unit for the hazard lights. To check the filaments of all of the turn signal bulbs and the brake lights, turn on the hazard flashers and walk around the car.
A flasher can be located in the fuse panel, under the dash in the wiring loom, in a glove box, under the hood, or somewhere else.
f36-02.jpg A fuse panel. Most flashers are located under the dashboard on the driver's side. When working properly, a flasher is easy to locate because it makes a ticking sound. When it is not functioning, a service manual may be needed to help locate it. Lighting company catalogs generally have pages listing the location of flashers.
To replace a flasher:
  • A flasher features two or three prongs that plug into a socket.
  • Just pull the flasher out of the socket and replace it with a new one.

Hazard/turn signal dont work 2002 monte carlo will not fash nor turn on once in a while indicator light blink for a slight second

you could have a bad flasher unit causing this.you say hazard/flasher not working.do you mean just the signals not working and think the hazards won`t work or are the hazards not working.there are two flasher units one for signal and one for hazards.you could have a problem with the signal switch as well.

Signal and hazard light go off

This may be caused by the flasher unit, it looks like a relay, it is electronic and not electro-mechanical like the old ones. here is a part # BUSSMANN Part # 761, about $20.00
