Its pinking which means the timing is too far advanced ,try 98 octane petrol .what year is vehicle as older engines were designed to run on higher octane a MK2 jag or austin westminster need 101 octane.whats happening is the petrol has a lower anti knock additive than higher octane ,although the petrol is the same flame rate of burn its the amount of anti knock additive which gives it its octane value.just check timing and if a distributor is fitted ****** it a bit i would suggest 8 btdc but if still pinks on low grade then 6btdc

I have a 2000 volkswangen jetta vr6 and it has a knocking sound in the top engine need to know if changeing the oil will fix the problem oil look realy thin and smells like gas.

If your oil smells like petrol (gas) this is a big problem. Drain the oil and replace it and the filter. I would take a sample of the oil to a mechanic just to get his opinion. Gas getting into the oil on a modern car (fuel injected) is less common then just burning oil but has been known to happen. Knocking sound is usually crank shaft damage which is not a good prognosis. It is likely if fuel is in there now it will get in there again - Your best chances are to use as heavy weight semi-synthetic oil you can get with the aim that the oil pressure will mean you burn oil in preference to fuel pressure pushing its way into your sump.

Knocking noise in engine of 2002 holden rodeo

Hi, is this a new noise ? If it is check the oil level as shown on the dip stick of the engine..... if you can hear knocking the engine will be pretty well buggered. How many km\'s has the vehicle done.... really, not what you can see on the speedo. One other thing is if the wrong fuel has been put in the tank, i.e diesel, or high octane petrol that the knock sensors cannot adjust to suit i.e av gas is a very high octane rating fuel that should not be used in engines designed for low octane.

Have 95 Nissan pathfinder with knocking noise from right side of car. Was told it was the lifters. Also have exhaust leak on same side of car. Was wondering how big of a job would these 2 problems be at...

I just purchased a 95 Pathfinder about a month ago from a gentleman that thought he had blown the motor due to the knocking sound that was coming from the right side of the motor. Turns out that it was either some really bad gas or some carbon build up. After purchasing I took it out on the interstate and gave it a good run, thinking it'll either blow or go and the knocking stopped all together! I talked to a Nissan mechanic and he advised me that the V6 does not have lifters as it is an overhead cam engine and that the knock sensor ( which BTW is on the right side) will not cause the knocking sound. What you need to be able to distinguish is the sound of the knock. I know that may not make much sense but it the knock is light and fluctuates with the engine RPM's and does not get worse or sound louder, then it is either the exhaust leak that you know of, or possibly some carbon build up or bad gas. If the sound is hard and gets louder with the engine RPM's then you may be looing at an internal engine malfunction such as a rod or main bearing issue. The V6 engine used in that model is one of the best and most durable engines that Nissan produced, so the likely hood of it being a bearing issue is slim to none if the vehicle has been maintained and regular oil changes were a part of that maintenance. I would recommend getting some Seafoam (which you can find at just about any autoparts store for under 10.00 bucks and putting half in the engine and the other half in the tank and just let it run *( If the knocking sound is not a hard knock) It will not hurt the engine and is compatible with all engine oils including synthetic. I would drive it as well. Now, back to the exhaust leak, if the leak is not that bad and the gasket has not deteriorated then it should get quieter as the engine warms up, but if the gasket is gone or deteriorated then the sound or knocking will pretty much remain the same. I have priced the replacement of the exhaust manifold(s) and it runs about 300.00 per side, the right side being the harder of the two. My Pathfinder has 232,000 and like I said, it worked for me. I hope that it will work for you as well and I hope that this information was useful to you.

Front driver side suspension knock over bumps

See if you can bounce car and replicate the noise. If you can, you should be able to find it, and put your hand on it. Stabilizer bushing are a place to look, both at the lower a arm and on the frame. If you narrow it down to the strut, it will need to be replaced. The front trans mount also goes bad, try putting it in drive with your foot on the brake and give it some gas and see if the engine moves an excessive amount.

Engine Knocking Noise

This problem in a car this new is likely to be caused by low octane gas. if it doesnt go away after the old gas has been removed and higher octane gas put in then there could be another problem. when does it make the knocking sound? is it only while under heavy load? ie going uphill in higher gears? is it manual or auto?

2003 Nissan Murano - Fuel problems - knocking sound

If the knocking did not go away with the higher octane fuel then you may have other problems. A dirty fuel injector oor a misfiring spark plug can also cause knocking in a modern car. A faulty sensor may also be causing the wrong fuel / air mixture in the cylinder... check out the cheapest fixes first.
