Failure of the blower motor resistor will cause this problem. I'm not sure where yours is located. They are usually on the firewall or inside the duct work near the blower.

The fan in my 2001 chevy tahoe doesnt work on 1 or 2 but 3 through 5 are fine

Usually a sign of a faulty blower resistor. The resistor changes the amperage of the circuit to change the blower speed.
You can look the part up online to get a visual.

The low/med/high fan switch on my 1985 Toyota pickup is no longer working, How do I replace the heater fan blower switch?

Hi,
Don't go there just yet ! Most heater motor speed problems relate to the heater resistor ! It's located in the ducting close to the motor assy and usually has 4/5 wires on to it and a 2 screw fixing. This componant must be cooled (hence air duct location) and is solely responsible for motor speeds ! You can check motor fan by test lamp/meter ! Good Luck

The fan on my heater/ac stop working on settings 1-4 for awhile it worked on #5 but has now stopped altogether

The blower resistor has gone out but if blower is no longer working on speed 5 then either the blower motor is bad as well or the pigtail connector to the motor are bad. Check the plugs to the resistor and to the blower motor for insulation damage discolored or melted wiring.

You will need to replace your heaters resister switch, which will make your heater work from 1 through 4 but is not your overheating problem. I would make sure your fan is working when when your engine gets hot.

Heater Control Switch Only Works on High

It appears there is a resistor block there, either at blower connection area, or at firewall area on passenger side under cowl somewhere. It is quite common for blower to only work on high when resistor goes. Look for block, or base, 1-1/2" x 3" approx. with electrical connector to it.
