Unless I'm way wrong. 4 cyl, front wheel drive? Your constant velocity joint has either lost its boot, losing all the grease or the joint is worn out. This is a repair for experienced gear heads. Not for amateurs.
The CV joint has nothing to do with the brakes you probably put something back wrong because you had to remove the Caliper and Brake pads. The CV joint you probably never replaced the C clip which keeps the shaft spline from going out into the hub. The CV joint also has to be synchronized. Which means they have to line up on both sides. Most will mark the shaft first, before removing.
the axle just pulls or snaps out of the trans, it is held in by an internal round spring clip, they are a real bear to remove the 1st time, u must pull straight out with a sharp jerking motion to get them to release, be patient it will come out.
