Clicking sound when trying to start 1987 jeep cherokee.

Left lights on- oops! -charged battery and then drove jeep for about 15 minutes. 2 hours later went out to start it up and it trys to turn over then begins to make a click sound. Is it a starter problem or a altinator problem. Battery is only a year old.

Probably is the electrical side. Start your vehicle, with the engine running disconnect the positive battery cable. If the engine dies then your alternator is the problem, if engine continues to run the battery is at fault.

    jUMP THE BATTERY TO START

The clicking sound is the selenoid trying to activate the starter but the battery is to low to do it. If you can start the engine like you said you did before then you can do what I said before and find out why your battery is dead. You rated my advice as inappropriate but I didn't know you knew nothing or I would have spelled it out in more detail.

sounds like a regulator malfunction to me..need to connect a battery/alternator tester to the system and see if the regulator is bad.. this will cause full charge of the alternator to enter the system.. this uses the battery as a regulator and will cause overheating of wires and relays..if the alternator can be removed and tested separately(most can), do this and see if this is the case..replace if bad..good luck..

Sounds like the fuel pump is going out. Replace the filter first, as it's only $10. If that doesn't fix it, then it's probably the pump, which is $250.

Sounds like a bad alternator, engine will only run till battery goes weak, due to alternator not charging system, any auto parts will check your charging system at no charge, hope this was very helpful.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

1990 JEEP Cherokee that won't start even after a new battery

It sounds kind of like you have bad alternator. The alternator uses the engines power to recharge the battery. When you replaced the battery the car ran off battery power untill it died. If the car will run while hooked up to another car while being jump started then the problem is deffinetely the alternator..

Please give a good rating, it is very importat to us..

98 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4X2 suddenly dies .....

It sounds like you have some **** in the gas tank that is being drawn to the pickup blocking it.
Have seen this and because it seems so random, it can drive ya nuts.

You might carry a coffee can with you and pull the line from the fuel rail when this happens stick it in the can and just have someone turn the key on for a few seconds.
Beware though, it comes out with force.

Also possible is a failed fuel pressure regulator.
Those aren't expensive and . . . well, not very good either.
