1998 Saturn sc2- car shuts off while driving

I was driving on the highway at 65 mph the car just shut off as if I had
turned off the key. When I attempted to restart ( several times) it would
run if I held it at 3000rpm, but once I let off it would die.

Had the same issue a few years back...and now something similiar.

My car would randomly shut off whether on the high way or not. Just replaced battery also. Brought to dealer, tested Batter/Alternator, and ended up with being just a loose battery cable. Fixed for about 4 years now.

Currently, I have a loose battery cable or ground, because the battery/alternator is fine, but when its cold, sometimes when I tap my brakes, the radio goes out randomly. Or lose all power after turning the key on, and move the positive battery cable around, and then everything works fine. So I am still trying to see what the problem is, just sounds like a cable or corrision.

Hope this helps.

You can defeat the oil level sensor by shorting the connector. Use a thick paper clip or other wire shaped in a "U" to connect the terminals in the plug. For the other problem, we will need trouble codes. Is the engine light on?

I have 2006 scion xb and when driving the rpm stays around3500-4000 when running 65 mph can it be modified to run lower rpm

3500 is about normal for an xb at 65 mph. My previous ride was a pickup and rolled at about 2000-2500 on the highway. But the XB's engine is way more "tightly wound". Your rpm gage should run at about half of of your 70 mph will be about 35 (3500) rpm, 80 mph will be about 40 (4000) rpm. Freaked me out when I first got the thing, but after researching it Ive found out that with a stock engine it actually runs more efficient at the higher RPM's. The 06 boxes won't redline until 6000 rpm, so unless you are driving 120 on a frequent basis you're good. You can probably have it modified to run lower, but you will lose the awesome gas mileage and overall it is not going to improve the way it runs, and would have no benefit............

Your alternator needs to be checked, if it goes bad the car will run of the battery but when the battery gets low the car will lose power and when the battery goes dead the car will just die and not restart. Did the engine even turn over when you tried to crank it if so its probably the alternator. I hope that helps you out!

Engine shuts down on deceleration

Well 145K is alot of miles, catera's are not that reliable especially after 100K. It sounds like you could have multiple issues but take it to a mechanic asap before it becomes unfixable.
