I need help please. My 09 CRV, few days ago I got the "Check Fuel Cap" message appear on my dash board, then the check engine light pop on (and the "Check Fuel Cap" disappear). I brought a new gas cap and installed in my CRV, a day later the check engine light went away. Now the "Check Fuel Cap" keeps coming back. To clear this message, I keep take the gas cap off and re-install it back and drive for few miles then the message go away but it will pop up couple hours later. I'm going crazy with this problem. Can someone help me????
Go to the parts store where you bought the cap. Sometimes the code clears on it's own and sometimes you need to have it reset. If this is not an option disconnect the negative battery cable for a minute. Just as a warning, if you disconnect the battery you will have to reprogram most all of your electronics.

Hello Michael.
While your fuel cap may still be an issue there are many other items that may be at fault. It's possible the fuel cap tightening is a coincidence and something else is causing the problem.
There are a few hundred possibilities that could turn on your MIL.
First thing that needs to be done is verify what the code is that turns on the light. If you are in the USA Autozone will give you a free scan to start you off. Then you can begin to home in on the problem.
Best of the festive season to you.

the check engine lamp is not affected by things like tyres, brakes etc. It shows that the vehicles engine management system had detected a fault with the engine or engine sensors. Check the engine for broken or disconnected wiring (maybe it was disconnected during the replacing of the hoses but not reconnected). If you fail to locate anything, check the manual for the correct fault code retrieval procedure or take the vehicle to a professional. Tyres may affect your ABS system or Airbag systems but they usually have their own warning lamp and are unrelated to the check engine lamp..

My check engine light was on for a long time, after new sparkplugs and several trips to tuffy auto and almost $500 spent I gave up and brought it to a honda dealer-I HAD BAD FUEL INJECTORS - $700 spent everything ok now.no more annoying check engine lights!!!!

Did you refuel while leaving the engine running? Have OBD scan done before light resets. Temporary errors are cancelled after a number of start cycles.

More than likely the internals of the cap or the seal has failed. Replacement is the fix.
