Replace Valve Body Gasket. They do blowout, which will cause this hesitating in shifting. Also Solenoid Pack can be cleaned or replaced. Yes you will have to drop the transmission pan drain fluid. If doing it yourself check 1a auto on You Tube. Good luck
I do not promote anyone site but this gives an idea of how it is done. Best to bring it to transmission shop. Just don't let them tell you that you need to replace transmission. Best to go to a shop that does theses repairs. It is costly if you don't do it yourself

No not the whole transmission. Could be a band or servo. It still has to come out and be tore down to fix.

96 Ford explorer i went to deive foward and i herd a bang then i could drive foward anymore i can back up just fine and i can shift gears just fine what couls be the possible problems

_Definitely_ bad ''solenoid pack.''

Do yourself a _big_ favor and have it repaired at the dealer. (Usually advise is _opposite_ of that, but that tranny needs dealer attention).

Trust me on this one...

Ps... Ask the dealer to remove ''adaptive shift learning'' (i.e. the computer ''learns'' your driving habits, and it doesn't work out well with multiple drivers). They can reprogram for ''standard automatic shifting.'' I cannot tell you how happy I am with that programming.

Heres the symptoms : engages but slips in reverse and drive, sometimes feels like partial brake applied. I have manual 1st and 2nd. When engaged in drive, you turn off overdrive and you can spin the...

it may be a bad transmission modulator valve located on the side of your transmission, vacum operated. a sudden downshift or forward shift when unexpected is sign of a bad modulator valve or a vacum leak to the transmission.best to shop around for a garage w/references when it comes to transmission work though. check all the vacum lines to your transmision, you need to look on the underneath side of your truck on the side of transmission for a loose or disconnected vacum line on the side of the transmission. when you feel the vacum line, follow it to the top of engine, the vacum line is about 3/8th line, and may be disconnected or losing air. to make this short, when you drive the car, start out in low gear and shift the transmission, manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd does it do right with no slipping? if it does this right and shifts great manually, the modulator valve on the side of the transmissions bad,or a bad vacum leak in-between.thank you for choosing fixya.com

DIsconnext and reconnect the linkage at the transmission. You may want top replace the linkage cable all together. Make sure you set the parking break and block the tires

98 ford explorer will drive but you put in in reverse will not go

It is possible that the shift linkage is out of adjustment and is going into neutral and not making it to Reverse, try moving the gear selector slowly from park, through reverse to Neutral, and see if it will go into reverse somwhere in between. If this does not work ,you may have Reverse gear failure, a common problem with explorer/ranger transmissions. unfortunatly it requires rebuilding the transmission
