Brake light switch problem may cause the ESP / BAS lights to illuminate.
Common symptoms of a bad
Mercedes brake light switch.
Car stuck in Park.
ABS ESP ETS lights come on.
Can not move the shifter from Park to Drive.
Brakes Defective Warning on Instrument Cluster
Car won't shift gears. Stuck in 2nd gear, limp mode.
Brake lights don't work. (Brake light switch can still be defective even if the brake lights work. Checking the brake light operation is not a good test.)
ESP, BAS, ABS lights turn on. Car won't shift properly. Stuck in gear.
TEST: To test your new brake light switch: Turn you car off to reset the ABS light. apply the parking brake. and start the car in neutral or park without using the brake. if the problem is the brake light switch... the light will only come on when you press the brake pedal.
If you replaced the brake light switch and the light is still on you should check a few other things such as:
Fuses and Relays
ABS wheel speed sensor
Brake Fluid Level
Get an advanced scanner to read trouble codes.
NOTE: ** You may need a MBZ scan tool to reset the error code which was stored in the ECU because of the bad brake light switch.
run a fault code reader to reset the abs and trac lights as the trac light uses the same sensor as the abs.. IF the pedal is still soft then there is still air in the brake system. You may have to crack the lines at the master cylinder first and bleed there first then start at the longest line and work back to the shortest
Red lite comes on at startup to ck. system. If amber lite stays on, ck. brake fluid level and see if emergency brake is partly up. This shows problem with anti lock system if it stays on, not main brake system. If all is ok with this but still stays on Have ABS system checked. Haynes repair manual, 95-2003 Windstar, all models.
1) try to use the self diagnose. 2) place ignition swtuch in the start position, the lights coming on 3) engine starts, the brake light sould turn off inmediately. the ABS ligth will illuminate for aprox 6 seconds. 4) test drive the vehicle at speed above 20mph for a few minutes. during the test the both test lights should remain off, if any one of the warninign light utron, take note of the condition. 5) stop the vechicle using the braking pressure.both light should remain offf during the stopping procedure. 60 place the gear selector in to PARK, and observe the warning lights, they should both be off. the traction control system works off of the abs system so there is a code in the abs module that needs to be pulled so you know were to start to check the system out.the service engine light is a different system all together and there is a code in the ecm that must be pulled so you know were to start to check to repair that system.you don`t say why you jumped to the conclusion that the gas cap set a code.the emergency brake light will come on if the e-brake is not all the way in the off position(something may be holding the lever up just enough to put the light on.the switch could be misadjusted and needs to e readjusted.

ABS light on as well? if so, you need a EBTCM module mounted to the
brake ABS pump facing the battery. There are places in the US that
rebuild them with warranty for under $150.
This problem sounds like and ABS module that has gone bad, the ABS module has toothed gears inside that actuate the ABS motor, if one of these gears slips a tooth or "unwinds" itself if will not circulate brake fluid to where it needs to go (ex: the rear brakes) alot of times the brake and ABS light will come on, but will not set any trouble codes. My recommendation is to take this to a repair shop and have them verify the problem and replace the ABS module, the motor gears have to be properly aligned when replacing or the lights will stay on and you will still have the same problem. I hope you have the problem fixed by now, but, it is the ABS control under the truck. You need to go under the hood and open the fuse box and disconnect the 60 amp fuse for the ABS, this will turn it off before it burns up. This however will also cause the traction assist off light to stay lit all the time. To the fix the problem you can pay tons of money ($700 or so) to have the dealership install a ABS control and the problem will happen again over time. Or, remove it yourself, go on ebay and ship it off to a guy who repairs them for about $150 and you will never have the problem again. Also, if you wrap your cable ends with plastic and protect them good, you can still drive you truck while the part is being worked on. It takes about a week.
