When you have an old battery, it does not have the storage capacity that it used to. Cold weather even takes more cranking power. Have your nearby part store check your battery. Many will do this for free or a small fee. If it's bad, replace it.

You might also clean the posts and clamps.

A car battery can run down for any of several reasons:

  • You accidentally left the lights on or some other accessory that pulls power from the battery even when the ignition key is off.
  • The battery is not being recharged while the vehicle is being driven (you have a charging problem)
  • There is a key off parasitic electrical drain on the battery because a relay is sticking, a module is not shutting down, or there is a shorted diode in the alternator.
  • Your battery is old and will not hold a charge anymore. The battery needs to be replaced.

Yes if left on over night in a weak battery With all the cold weather it could be too weak to handle the drain and need to be replaced Check with your local auto parts store they can scan for problems and also test your battery for free

If the altenator shows good, what would cause a new battery to go dead over night?

Hello,
An open circuit, ( an electrical short ), could cause it.

A bad connection at the battery terminals could cause it, not only can a bad connection prevent the vehicle from starting, it also prevents the alternator from putting a charge back in to the battery.

Often the battery cable clamps can crack on the bottom side and prevent the clamps from being tight enough for a good connection.

Also, very common in cold weather, even with a brand new battery, the new battery may not have the minimum cold cranking amps, ( MCCA ), to start an engine in the cold weather. You may want to make sure, if you already haven't, that your battery meets the manufacturer's MCCA requirement.

I hope this helps you.

I have trouble starting my van when its is cold. after that its fine. the colder it is the longer it takes to start.

Not an unusual problem.....

Most important- tune-up! Make sure your plugs, distributor cap and rotor (if so equipped), air and fuel filter are OK and have been changed (at minimum) according to your owner's guide.

If your vehicle cranks over slow when cold-starting, consider a new battery. In cold weather, batteries lose efficiency, and older batteries lose more power than new ones.

Next... Gas - the fuel in cold weather states has a formula change in winter months to lower emissions- sometimes going to the next higher grade of fuel (example: from regular to mid-grade) helps.

If you have a garage, keeping the vehicle inside makes a huge difference with cold weather starting.

Keep your fuel tank full. Running the tank down and leaving it near empty most of the time allows condensation, which will result in getting water in your fuel, leading to hard starts and poor performance, and the increased risk of "rusting through" which will cause a leaky fuel tank.

I have a 1992 toyota 4wd 3l that has been starting really hard especially on cold mornings. i cleaned the cold start injector and changed the timmer but it still does it. can anyone help? thanks rick

Check your battery for proper volts (12.6). Sometimes the cold weather will bring a battery down. Also check the Starter Relay, again cold weather will make it stick causing it not to start. Those are the biggest problems with a car not starting in the cold weather unless you have something else going on then your starter and your ignition needs to be checked.

Hello my name is Christina I have a 2005 Ford Explorer and my check charging system light keeps on coming up. I changed the alternator 2 to 3 times already I have had the car for about one year and half....

It seems like there is most likely a bad connection between your alternator and your battery I would look into replacing those wires. That is far more likely than that many bad alternators.

Sorry low last night here was -15°F, you do not have cold weather.
Any battery that is areplacement for your van will work. Your battery must be old - as older will not have a good of cranking power.

Engine starts, but won't stay started unless I step on the gas.

It sounds like to me your mechanic recommened you change your timing belt and water pump due to a maintance issue. If vehicle still runs good with old timing belt new belt wont change running. Cold weather and low cranking amps (poor battery) will cause starting problems.

1998 saturn sl will not start if it gets bellow 32 degrees

I would check the cold start valve. It is also known as the fifth injector. It injects a small amount of fuel only during cold weather. Also might be called an enrichment valve. The same a s a choke on carb. models.
