How do you know if you need to replace the water pump or the thermostat

does it make funny noises under the hood? if not go for the thermostat- actually do that regardless- its cheap and you will likely need to replace it if the pump is gone anyway. and if you are somewhat comfortable under the hood its a medium/low skill DIY project.
