Question about 1993 Volvo 240

1 Answer

Overdrive complications i have a 1993 volvo 240 and i have a problem with the overdrive. the light comes on automatically and sometimes i can;t turn it off. now i have a considerable amount of extra weight in my trunk (i'm on a road trip) and i'm driving through some steeper grades, so it kind of makes sense for it to pop on sometimes, but it's crunching my gas mileage and i'm curious to know wether my relay system is acting up or what

The failure of the relay for the overdrive is a common problem with this vehicle. However, before you replace it, the wiring that goes to the overdrive solenoid needs to be checked. It tends to rub on the transmission housing, and then it shorts out the relay. If you replace the relay without fixing this, it will destroy the new relay!

To access the relay, pull the glove box housing, an it's right behind the center console.

When was the last time that you had the transmission serviced? Sounds like something is plugging the valve body.

Do all 1991 240 automatic Volvos have Overdrive and what is overdrive used for?

All the ones I have come across have it. Basically it allows gearbox and engine to sync for greater fuel economy when you are not 'town driving' I.e doing more than 25 MPH. I've always left my overdrive engaged as you usually get better fuel economy. To try, take it onto a long open road, engage overdrive and bring her up to speed. Then turn off overdrive and watch your fuel gauge. You can pretty much see it drop.

What is happening is the tranny is going. They can try to replace the selenoid, but really, you need a rebuild. Whomever charged you to remove the light, probably messed things up more. Volvo's typically lose overdrive before losing all the other gears. It is time for a rebuild. Go to a reputable tranny shop who knows volvos.

940 volvo comes out of overdrive without touching button

IPDusa.com.  If its similar to a 240 (and it most likely is) you can purchase a block off plate for the solenoid so you won't lose 4th gear (actually its OD from torque converter lockup).

The service light is a reminder for you to have the car serviced, it can be reset, and it will come on again in 5,000 miles or so.

The overdrive light may be caused by the wiring to the overdrive solenoid on the transmission, or the relay. Just be sure the wiring is ok before replacing the relay, or you can damage the new relay.

Auto transmission will not go into high gear.

Just went thru this on my 93 240. There's a solenoid inside the glove box, on the left side that needed replacing, with age it started getting fussy, and one day I had overdrive, and the same afternoon I didn't, then next day it was fine, then it wasn't, and so on...Most annoying driving around in 3rd all day....Anyways, the part was about 75$ at a dealer, and installation was about 5 minutes...Solved the problem just fine...Also have your mechanic check the shift cable....it needed changing at the same time as the solenoid...jda/boston

Stuck in overdrive

Overdrive relay usually fixes the problem. With the engine idling quietly, press the OD switch on the shift lever. Do you hear a click? If not, it is probably the relay. Located behind the glove box, passenger side. toward the center console. Pick up a used one on Ebay ( about $10 bucks) and swap it out. Cured my problem right away. Be sure you change the correct relay because Volvo hides several back there. I would buy the spare, then match it with the one now installed. If not the relay, you will need a new solenoid in the transmission. About $200 installed.
