Search the web. Earlier models (740, 940) can suffer a solder joint failure or corrosion at the pins of the bulb failure sensor unit (a large round red can behind the fuse panel of the 940, may be different on yours).
People claim that resoldering wire (remove the lid) where it enters the pin or burnishing the pins (if there is corrosion, which may be clear) does the trick.

If there are no brake lites, including the 3rd. ck fuses first. if fuse is ok. maybe ck brake switch down at the pedal, bad connection or bad switch. if any of the lites work, maybe bulbs or sockets. not sure if it has a brake switch relay.

When my lights are on the brake lights do not work, they work when the lights are off

Only way to resolve this issue is to have a schematic available to trace where the hot line for your lights could be going over to the brake lights circuit and powering them on.

Brake light switch on 2001 volvo s40=my brake lights work sometimes and don't work sometimes. I have checked all fuses and bulbs. I have tried fiddling with the brake light switch and can make the brake...

Yes switch is the problem. Volvo claim they sell very few switches, probably because people bought new cars instead. Problem can be associated with failed ignition coils (2 of) but one does not cause the other but very confusing. Engine fails intermittently or conks out.
Reset battery earth connection on chassis bad design here. Clean off paint and thread also bolt coating. Even better, use brass bolt but do not overtighten. Volvo will try to get you to replace alternator which is not necessary.
Failing battery will light up all the warning lights but will not isolate the battery so if it shorts car will die and not run on alternator. If this happens disconnect battery until you get to garage.
Now you know you can buy an old S40 with confidence great car and very cheap for what you get.

Do I need a special tool to compress the calipers on for the front brakes on a volvo s40?

I have used a gawdawfully large C-clamp on many cars, would assume one would also work on a volvo. Measure the thickness of the caliper and go to a hardware store and buy yourself one to fit.

Engine acceleration

Causes for the car accelerating on its own are:

The cable under the hood that operates the gas is getting stuck.

Throttle pedal stuck.

Idle air control valve faulty.

There is a large vacuum leak.

ECU car computer is faulty.

The most common is the IAC, the repair is not expensive, but the car cannot be driven in this conditions.

Volvo s40 1998 bulb warning light on, what does this mean

If by that you mean:

"warning light goes on when I start the motor, and goes off after first time I use the brake pedal"

, don't worry, it's normal, it's how it work. If it stays on even after the use of brakes, you have a bad bulb on brake tail lamps
