Nissan has a Shift Interlock system that requires you step on the brake before the car can be shifted out of Park. With the key ON you should hear a solenoid kick in and when you step on the brake, you should hear it kick out.

1995 nissan sentra automatic trasmission will not go into passing gear

Gear shifts happen depending on how far the gas pedal is
pressed & the load on the vehicle

Transmission pressures change as you drive under different conditions,so the shifts happen at different speeds

There is no passing gear

If you have a 4 speed, you have 3 forward gears & an overdrive
forward gear, plus torque converter lock-up

You saying you have no 4th to 3rd downshift or whatever

Maybe the transaxle is failing mechanically inside-worn out

in the transmission, there should be a plug you can unplug to disable it at the transmission. the truck will still drive but you will lose some fuel mileage.

I have a 2007 Nissan Maxima with 51,000 miles. I was told that my shift lock control had gone bad and needs to be replaced. How often does this happen with this type mileage?

Never have heard anything on this problem and have 3 friends with these cars with more mileage and they have not had this issue.

Grinding in first and second gear

There are synchronizer rings on the mainshaft between the synchro hub and the gears. These rings help in meshing the gears so they don't 'grind' when shifting.

I think whoever rebuilt your transmission needs to fix it. It sounds like the synchronizer rings were left out, or possibly there is not enough allowance for the synchronizers to rotate freely -- the axial 'play' when they build up the gearsets on the mainshaft.

Looking for the shift lock control switch ,can not put car in gear when the brakes are pressed

it's near the shift lever (that's the best description it my manual gives). on my windstar it was mounted on the steering colunm and the pin came out to lock the shifter... when you hit the brake the pin retracted... so i don't think you will have to hard a time finding it.
