Question about 1998 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

98 Altima stalls while slowing or stopped at red lights

The car runs great but often stops while slowing down or stopped in idle. Replaced the fuel filter but it almost seems worse. What could this be and how do I do a computer scan for a code? Thank you.

Please help! The problem is getting worse and not even the Nissan dealership can diagnose. Now, when driving on the interstate the car acts sluggish at times like it is having a fuel problem. Intermittent stops and idling it will stall. There is times that it will drive perfect? The check engine light is not on and I took the car to a Nissan dealer. They said no codes were coming up and when the guy test drove it, nothing! Did mention something about perhaps the computer or distrubitor may have an issue but since there are no codes, it is not feasible to buy these expensive parts not knowing. So he suggest keep driving it until the light comes on or it breaks down. Are you serious! Said all the sensors seem okay and engine is smooth. Could anyone give me a suggestion that may pan out. Thank you for all your help.

I have a 98' altima which is having the exact problem - stalls on idle and sometimes jerks and lurches during accelaration. we cleaned the fuel injector, changed the cap sensor and the idle valve and that didn't solve the problem. The computer doesn't show any codes and the check engine light is not on. the car has been in the shop for almost a month now and still no clue. if anyone has any idea what this mysterious malfunction is please share!

this just started happening to me. I thought fuel filter at first too. I will research the idle sensor from samson-1 above.

I've been having the same problem with my Nissan for the last two weeks. Car stalls when stopped or on acceleration. It's intermittent and seems to only happen when I'm alone in the car. As soon as I leave it at the garage, it performs beautifully. Mechanic thinks it might be the fuel pump. Has anyone looked into that?

I am very disappointed that the people who have posted here have not followed up and let everyone know if they have solved the problem.

Most likely solution is probably idle sensor.

I had same the problem, car stalling at red light or slow speed, I took it to 5 different mechanics but no one could idenify the problem, because the car runs good when it is at the shop. Then I took it to **** Smith Nissan at Beltline blvd in columbia, SC, the mecahnic took 5 hours to identify the problem, he said its air flow meter and idle control valve problem and would cost me $1500. Then I took it to Altima expert Lowell Hayes at Columbia and he changed air flow meter and fuel filter for only $170 and now the car is running all u need to do is find some good and cheap mechanics...good luck

My car keeps stalling everytime I stop or slow down but starts up straight away after it has stalled?

The vacuum hoses have probably started cracking at the turns. If there has been any under the hood work done, sometimes things get pushed on or moved and the rubber hoses on the vacuum system will get old and crusty and crack. That cause the car to die when it slows down to an idle, like at a stop sign or stop light. then it starts and runs normal until the next stop sign.

98 GMC k2500 7.4L Rouch Idle

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

1999 Alero stalling and trac off light coming on

does the rpm motor kick down? you may need to check your vacuum hoses, and also you may want to check your exaust, sounds wierd but that can cause the car to stall at for the traction light, your hitting the brakes to hard. try slowing down a little slower while stopping, and keep distance for saftey.. if you can take it a little slower at lights and turns, without braking hard and it stops stalling.

This problem apears when the battery has been diconected for some time. Start the car, and leave in in idle without driving it for about 10 min. The car runs fine after that.
