The most likely problem is a faulty master cylinder or if your ABS light came on, a wheel speed sensor problem . Did you do any work on the brakes recenntly? if so check front sensors. If brakes are old the caliper pins could be worn and binding....this really should be checked by a pro with VAG Com scan tool.

still..if locked up in neutral as well... you must be experiencing a brake problem ..only other issue it could be is a shift linkage issue locking transmission in a gear

  • milespeed Dec 08, 2008

thank you for letting us know the solution...yes, transmission locked internally.a rare thing , but what caused it? unless exacerbated by trans shift linkage trying to engage more than one gear at a time ..be sure to have trans guy check shift linkage/ shift solenoids thoroughly before sending you down the road...good luck

Made a mistake. 2000 vw beetle 01m auto trans car was perfectly fine, pulled out excelerated, car sounded like it popped into neutral, revs but doesnt move, any gear p1780 code. My bad!!

P1780
Torque Reduction Malfunction

You will need a shop to look into this as a VW factory scanner is needed to continue diagnostics.

2000 vw beetle 01m auto trans, car was fine, trans was fine, pulled out excelerated, car sounded like it went into neutral, wont move in any gear. P1680 code. Help

Has to do with the throttle position sensor or pedal position sensor. Needs to be on a scanner. Just to see which it not working. Could also be a limp mode code. since the transmission quit pulling. I suggest you get it to a transmission shop. Most shops won't/cant diagnose transmission. They will try though.. Just costs you more.

My vw beetle 2000 gear selection has issues, it shows neutral on dash board but D on gear lever shifter,D on dash board while shifter is on 3. What could be the problem? Thanks Chris.

Could be a mechanical issue if cable to transmission is loose. Has anyone worked on the transmission ? If so, cable might not of been properly aligned to actual transmission lever.

VW New Beetle Turbo GLX stalls, transmission problems.

I have a 2000 Volkswagen beetle turbo as well, and experienced this same problem. It seemed to be especially worse in bad weather. We have taken it various places but no one could seem to fix it since it was sporatic. Finally, we had some hoses replaced, and havent had any problems with it for about a month now.

Cannot get the car in gear

There is a switch that is moved by brake pedal to shift tranny. This is the neutral/safety switch. If it is bad, car won't shift or start.

2002 Turbo VW Beetle

start by putting trans in nutral (with e brake on) than turn the key just short of turning on the ing press the brake andyou will need to grabe the shifter with the right hand and the key with the left hand now turn key just enough to move shifter slightly out of nutral right between nutral and drive it might a couple of trys but you will get it.
