Depends on year of break for models, check in trunk, lift carpet and see if you have access panel to fuel pump sending unit, if not then fuel tank must be removed

92 mercury couagar xr7 - I ran out of gas and now I cant start it with gas in it??

The fuel pump in th car is inside the gas tank, the tiny pump is cooled and lubricated by the gas it sits in, when you run it out of fuel it can seize up the pump bearings from heat, that is what has happened in this case i am sure. You will need to drop the exhaust system and then the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump, also replace the fuel filter.

How to change the fuel pump

Basicaly your fuel pump located inside of gas tank, you have to lift and secure the vehicle high enough to lose and drop the gas tank!!
Before decided to do this make sure gas tank is near empty lift&secure the vehicle visual check around the gas tank make sure all fuel and evap lines are disconnected nothing hold the gas tank except holder brackets, use under jack and safely secure gas tank( do not use direct jack to gas tank use wooden piece to dont damage it)
use right size socket and wrench lose braket holdet nuts and bolts safely drop the tank and place on safe work place (no smokes or sparks)
locate to fuel pump and remove the locker pin and pull out fuel pump slowy your fuel pump should sale complete assembly so replace pump unit and be carefully complete wire connections (TIPS,,With new fuel pump make sure replace the sealing gasket with correct new one or you gonna have serivce engine light for small evap leak so make it right at first time!!))
reinstall eveything the way you removed it !!
good luck and make sure you gonna have helper around to drop the tank<

After fueling my 2006 Chrsler 300 C Hemi it sputters and dies

most likely problem is a bad fuel pump. Filters can be in tank or anywhere from the tank to the engine compartment depending on manufacturer and model. You put in new filters when you put in a new pump. UNLESS YOU ARE REAL HANDY AND HAVE THE TOOLS and a manual, fuel pressure tester etc, leave this to a real mechanic. Some tanks have to be drained and dropped , some have access panels in the top under the back seat.

I have a 1989 Bronco 2 and it is not getting the fuel right. I think it is the fuel pump. Does anyone think what else it would be. I already replaced the filter. How would I replace the fuel pump?

The fuel pump is in the tank. Drop the gas tank.

1. Support the gas tank with a jack or something
2. unbolt the gas tank straps
3. unscrew the rubber filler neck going to gas tank
4. Lower gas tank slowly and disconnect gas lines
5. Turn the retainer ring that holds the fuel pump in the tank and left out.
6. Drain gas into gas cans to make the gas tank easier to left
7. Replace fuel pump and reinstall gas tank.

I think the fuel pump is not working, do I have to drop the gas tank to replace?

Yes the fuel tank has to come out to replace the fuel pump.Easier if tank is 1/4 tank or lower. Before doing this make sure that your getting power to the fuel pump.If not check the fuses and the connector for the fuel pump. You can check for power with a test light. It will be the gray wire.Light should come on when the key is turned on.Will only stay on for 2 or 3 seconds unless you crank it.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Fuel pump, where is it located, in the tank or out?

Most likely if this is a fuel injected vehicle which most modern vehicles are. The fuel pump is located in the gas tank. To get to it, you most likely have to drop your exhaust then drop your rear axle in most cases to then be able to drop the gas tank and access the fuel pump.

How do I empty gas tank on a 6 deville?

I assume that you need to change the fuel pump. Before you do this loosen the gas cap and try to run the car. Cadillac and other new cars have a vacuum pump to pull vapors back to the engine. If that pump does not work the tank builds up a vacuum and the car will not KEEP running on the road. It could be the vaccum pump and not the fuel pump---Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. If you determine that the fuel pump is, indeed, the culprit; it is possible that the fuel can be sucked past the fuel pump. To do this; determine which is the line running to the fuel rails--it is about 5/16 " diameter/Black in color.

If you plan to cut this line to apply suction/pump--have a repair plan in place as these lines are NOT available even from Salvage yards.

Simple hose and clamps will not do it--they blow off on the road.

Glue---Sections of tight fitting over fitting hose and more glue---clamps--retaining wire---do it all !!!.

The tank can be dropped with a floor jack in the center of the tank---disconnect the holding straps from the back of the car--the tank will drop at the front enough to disconnect the various hoses from the pump/guages .--The fuel pump can be removed this way without taking the plastic fuel tank completely out or the gas out of the tank--------The front of the tank will slide down the straps and push to the back allowing work to be done. Get the car off the ground about 18 inches. DO NOT use and incandescant bulb for light as it can ignite gas fumes---Be concerned !!!

When you work on this problem---match mark everything including the hose routing to the tank--you might think that you will remember---but pulling th tank down again to reposition a hose route is a pain--been there---done that !!--best to use spray paint for hose routes. Be sure to mark the hose ends that go closest to the tank.

Be sure not to bend the float assembly when removing the pump. The fuel guage will be affected.

At the back of the tank/top there is a wiring harness that needs to be unplugged---do it. Do it first.

I hope this helps--Rick
