Question about Ford Escort

My 1997 Escort temperature guage goes off the scale when I switch it on. Have filled coolant.

The temperature sending unit which only controls the gauge is bad it is located on the left of the cylinder head very close to the exhaust manifold, first check and makes sure that rhe wire is not grounding if the wire is ok replace the temperature sending unit

Could be a shorted sensor , have you replaced it ? Shorted wiring , A problem with in the instrument cluster . Would need to do some testing to find out what causes this . I would tell you to check power an ground of both circuits involved ,could you do that ? You would need pin out charts of the connectors that go to the instrument cluster . find the wire for coolant sensor , then find that same wire color at the coolant sensor an with ohm meter check to see if wires are shorted to ground etc...

The engine coolant temperature is operated by two coils. The battery voltage is applied to both of the coils. One of the coils is grounded directly and the other coil is grounded through the engine coolant temperature sender. The engine coolant temperature sender has a resistance of 44 ohms at 125?° C (260?° F). The resistance increases at lower temperatures. The resistance is approximately 1365 ohms at 37?° C (100?° F), causing the current through the engine coolant temperature sender at one of the coils to increase, as the coolant temperature decreases and moves the pointer.
Fuel Gauge
The magnetic fields of the two coils moves the fuel gauge pointer. The two coils are at right angles to each other. The battery voltage is applied to the E coil and the circuit divides at the opposite end of the E coil. One voltage path continues to ground through the F coil, as the other goes to ground through the variable resistor of the fuel level sender.
The resistance of the fuel level sender is low when the fuel tank is low. A large flow of current passes through the E coil and the fuel level sender resistor. The current pulls the pointer towards the E on the scale.
The fuel level resistance is high when the fuel tank is full. The increased current flowing though the F coil moves the pointer to the F on the scale. With the two coils operating the pointer, the fuel gauge is not affected by the any changes in the voltage of the system.
Without being able to test the electrical circuits , I would say there is a problem inside the instrument cluster. You could take it out an have it tested or you could get a used one from a auto salvage yard for $15.00 an see if the problem goes away .

My temperature guage stays in the middle, is this ok?


Yes, the temperature gauge should normally stop in the middle, between the cold and hot points on the gauge. When the engine is cold the thermostat will be closed and will keep recirculating the coolant in the engine block until it warms up sufficiently. Then the temperature of the warm coolant will cause the thermostat to open the channel to the radiator to get rid of excess heat, which should stop the coolant from over heating. So the effect of the thermostat keeps the coolant at a fairly stable temperature. When the coolant runs low, it can't transfer enough heat to the radiator and the coolant and engine then over heats. Watch for radiator leaks under your car after you have been driving it. If the coolant goes low again fairly quickly you could have a leak in a hose or the radiator itself.

The coolant temperature switch and fan control switch are located sie by side, mounted in the steel portion of the heater hose that runs from the thermostat housing to the firewall, it is underneath the air intake tube and the ignition coil pack, mounted to the back of the cylinder head. Either drain out some coolant or be very quick, and you can unplug and unscrew each switch from the hose and replace it with a new one. Make sure the engine is cold. After replacing make sure to check the coolant level add as neccessary. The single wire connector switch is for the guage, and the other is for fan control. Hope this helps, let me know.

If it is not an instrumentation problem then you have to assume the coolant is heat cycling. It could be because the cooling fans are not coming on due to the temperature switch, fans or relay. This would explain why the temperature increases when you are stopped and decreases when you are accelerating and air is moving over the radiator.

Sounds like the Coolant is not full and has a air bubble. It is very important to have the system filled complete. That would be the first step.Good luck and have a great day.

My 1997 Escort temperature guage is going off the scale when I switch it on. The coolant is full.


This could be a number of things, u checked the 1st, coolant level is ok. How long after starting the car does this occur? 5 minutes, more, less? If it is happening quickly, it is possible the thermostat is not opening. U can remove the thermostat, check it for any obvious problem (broken spring,etc). If no apparent problem visually, get an old pot, fill w water, bring to boil, drop in thermostat, see if it opens when water brought to a boil. If it doesn't, replace it. Let me know what u find, we can continue to search for a fix if the thermostat is ok.
