Question about 1991 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

91 camray 2.0 4cyl. wont start after driving for 20 min.

After driving the car for a short time and it reaches normal temps and you shut it off and go to start it back up it wont turn over. all dash lights work and everything else but no starter action! I can push start the car and it will start and run,or if the car sits for say 30 min it will start again. So, is a circut getting hot or something? the starter when it does work sounds completely normal, how about the switch at the clutch petal it seems like that ****** has to be cramed to the floor kinda hard, could that be a problem? Where should i start?

I would start by have the starter itself checked. Electrical resistance may be increased by warmer temperatures.

check for hot fuel lines causing a vapour lock situation. move any lines away from heat sources or insulate with fibre glass cloth
if it is a carby unit , the problem can sometimes be overcome by placing a fuel filter in the line just next to the carby

Could be the heater valve is not opening very far. Could be the heater core is mostly plugged with rust. Could be the thermostat is not closing. Do you have a temp gauge on the dash? Does the engine reach normal temp in about two miles of driving?

On some models, the Engine Control unit has a power supply relay. These relays some times get internal dry solder points. After driving for some time the the solder will get hot and separate. When it cools down it makes contact again. You will have to replace this relay or open it up and re- solder the solder joints. The relay is usually located on the main relay station in position 3. the relay station is located behind the right dash panel.[right hand drive vehicles]. You may need to refer to a manual for your specific model to find the exact location of the relay.

First thing in the (cold) mornings heater wont work. water gauge flux's up and down weird . then about 20 mins into driving its warms up

Your engine coolant is what your heater gets the heat from. You need to start your car and let it warm up for awhile before any heat will come. This is how most cars heaters work. Yours sounds like it is working fine; most cars take a little while to warm up.

Hope this helps!

Intermitant temperature

Check to make sure your thermostat works right by monitoring the warming up of your engine. With a completely cold engine, start and run the engine for a few minutes, then put your hand on the top radiator hose to monitor if and when it gets warm as the thermostat opens more and more and note the gauge reading( if it works) the top radiator hose should be unbearably hot within 5-8 minutes. If the therm. opens right it should close right aswell, staying open a little while eventhough the radiator may have cooled may be what you are experiencing causing the rapid cooling and is nothing to worry about. The Hose should not get warm very soon after starting the engine. Regarding you gauge, lets take one step at a time, verify proper op. or the therm.
