Question about 1999 Volkswagen Golf
I have a Golf 3 GTS which has been jumping out of gear for no apparent reason. It started with 2nd gear and now the reverse gear is also jumping out. It makes a grinding noise while jumping out of reverse, but no noise when it comes out of second gear.
The clutch has always given problems and I have already replaced it twice (i have only had the car for about 18months) But this feels different. No slipping of gears, it just jumps out.
Sounds like a stripped reverse gear. And for the second gear probally need a new gear (1st 2nd) and the syncros with a new hub. If too much metal from the gears has already made it's way around in the bearings through the transmission oil you might be looking at a new transmission. The Golf 3 generation had many problems with reverse gears. Sorry to be the one to tell you.
