Question about 1989 Isuzu Trooper

1 Answer

Help please !!!

My 89 Trooper as idling super high today (near 3000 on my tach) with the clutch depressed. I was on my way to work and parked it until lunch. At lunch, drove it, and the idle was back down to normal, but now I have no power.

I have the same problem intermittently with my 91 Trooper - but only when the weather gets cold. I've got the V-6 engine with throttle body fuel injection, which I have no idea how to adjust. It tends to go away when the engine warms up, but it won't go below 3000 rpm unitl it gets nice and warm. Sometimes it will stop if I turn of the engine for a minute and then fire it back up.

It runs great otherwise (except for the amazing lack of horsepower - typical trooper).

I'd love to know how to fix this.

I sort of have the same problem.
I have a 1988, the 4-cylinder and the idling is all messed up.
When its cold outside it doenst want to idle at all and i have to give it gas in order to keep her from stalling
when its at a normal operating temperature the trooper holds an idle but its not that great. sometimes it goess really low doewn to 200 or 300 then it will bounce back up if i tap the gas. a
Sometimes it will idle very high, around 1500 and if i tap the gas it goes back down to normal which is 900-ish.
But my big problem is getting it do idle when its cold because its a pain in the **** not being able to warm it up in the morning.

If I remember correctly it is the EGR valve. That simple. it is the round thingamajigger with vacume tubes comming aout the top and bottom side, its in the back (firewall) to the right of intake manifold on 4 bangers. Also check all vacume hoses for cracks, connectors etc. Especially right under the intake manifold where ther are three of four together, they get bunped off easially. also when you turn on the Defrost it will help to increase idle untill warm. don't forget to check air filter too. if dirty it can cause the vacume ssensor to missread and please make sure it is all sealed properly, clamps tight.

A couple days of driving like that, and you will
be pulling the trans, and emptying your bank account

I would not drive any of todays high tech vehicles,
farther, than to get home, then park them, until you
diagnose and repair.

You could possibly need a new trans pressure control
and solenoid pack , in trans,if it doesn't shift perfectly,
and if the tach flairs at all,it is slipping, good luck on that.

Don't use it at all, get it checked out

It's fuel infected and it has a vacuum leak, most likely a PCV valve that is stuck open, I've seen a few now. Replace the PCV valve 1st, if that doesn't fix it, start looking for a hose that has come off.

You either have an intake manifold leak, a defective trottle position sensor or a stuck idle speed control valve.
