Question about 1997 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Headlight problem I have a 1997 Pontiac Firebird. I have had issues with the headlights since day one. First, i had the usual grinding gears issue but i replaced them with the brass gears. Now, however, when i turn my lights on, the driver side goes up like its supposed to, but my passenger light goes up and down and up and down, it doesnt stop going up and down for id say five seconds. When it does stop its not usually in the right place like it should be. Same when I turn them off. Im pulling my hair out trying to think of why it does this. I have replaced the sensor and yet it still does this. any ideas??

So your talking like the electrical ground cable? I guess I wasnt aware that a ground could cuase this type of problem, yet ive tried troubleshooting everywhere else. Wouldnt the ground affect both lights? or just one? because the other light goes up and down like it should.

So if I take a look at that, that may fix the issue? Might need a replacement ground wire then? Im surrpised that only one headlight is messing up if its the ground, I would think a ground would affect both.

I cleaned off the corosion (spell?) It made my lights alot brighter which im happy with but it didnt solve the issue. I think my gear housing might be loose. I wonder if that might finally be it.

Yes had this same problem on my 1984 Corvette and my 1982 Trans AM, it was the head lite motor ground, not sure where it would be on your car but it was near the head lite doors on my cars.

It is the wiring harness ground to the headlight motors, it will be a 18 guage wire and black connected to the body of the car near the headlight.

Most likely the ground lead is making a poor connction to the body, clean off the paint under the ground lug and reconnect it.

How about the relays that operate the motor, have they been replaced. Also I am not sure you found the right ground, the headlight bulb ground is not the one i'm referring to.

Electric motor of headlight don't stop when its down

The gear in headlight assembly is cheap plastic from the factory and is no good. A seller on E-bay has the assembly with machined brass gears that wont fail you no time soon!

2000 pontiac firebird headlights make grinding niose when closed

This problem is caused by the headlight gear being stripped. If you go on ebay, there is someone who sells brass headlight gears. Once you put the gear in, you will not have this problem again. . . unless the other gear goes bad. It's usually the driver's side headlight that does it.

i had the same problem, open the hood look by the headlights, just to the side of them you will see knobs. with the lights off turn the knobs (one at a time it is easier), turn it 'till the light come all the way up, do the same for the other then turn the lights on , they should try to go up and the immediately go down. this usually resets the motors to allow the to reach there complete stooping point.

When I turn off the car and lock it either manually or with the remote, the headlights "growl" and flip up and down twice. After that everything is fine. I have a 2000 Pontiac Firebired.

I have had this problem in the past. The issue here is that the headlight gear is likely worn down. Gm manufactored these headlight gears in plastic and sadly they break really easy over time. Same problem with corvettes. Anyway, there is a website that offers a free solution or to order the more duable brass gears. I ordered the brass gears for my 1997 Firebird and that solved the issue. Heres the site http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/headlightfix/index.htm
