Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Headlights and radio display goes off sometimes

I have a 97 Grand Prix GTP. The daytime running lights goes out. The display of the radio goes out at the same time. The radio still works, the windows works, brake ligths and signaling lights work ok. The fan works, the power seat/mirrors also work. The lights can stay off from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. This occurs sometimes when I start the car but mostly when I am driving. So I do not drive this car at night. There is no fault codes in the computer.  Need help...3 dealer's techs have not been able to locate problem but they still charge me for looking. Thanks in advance

Certain circuits go through the ignition switch and sometimes the points in the switch become gummed up with carbon. The easiest fix is to replace the ignition switch. The switch can, however, be disassembled and cleaned by a skilled mechanic (there are many small springs and parts that have to be assembled properly).

Long story short, replace the ignition switch.

Hope this helps

Are all fuel pumps from 97 Pontiac grand prix compatible with fuel pump for a 97 Pontiac grand prix GTP super

No.
The only pump that will work in a GTP model is the pump for that model. And there are more than one tag number for the GTP.
Flow rates can be anything between 20 and 60 GPM.
You have to match the tag code for your car.

My headlights on my 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP wont ever turn off. Even when i turn the switch to the "OFF" position. They are only off when the key is not in the ignition. What is wrong?

This is the way they were made, and unfortunately, I know a few times I wanted to turn mine off too. The only other way to keep them off when running the engine at least, Is before starting, to engage the parking brake. Then you can start the car and turn the lights off. Sometimes it's at least useful when you want to park at night with the car running, but not have your lights lighting up the block!

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT multifunction switch problem?

I had the exact same problem, I changed the "ignition switch" because the contacts inside were burned, this is why you see all those troubles coming in and out at different moments. It costed me 150$ to do it myself, buy the switch on an online reseller, must cheaper than the dealer! Now everything is back to normal on my Grand Prix GT 99 exept that my headlights don't light up automatically when starting the car... I have to check my fuse/relay and switch to make sure everything is ok on that side.

Good luck.

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT multifunction switch problem?

The multi function switch is the turn signal switch. It also does control wipers and lighting. If you are having the issues you describe then you will most likely have a body control module problem. Before you spend the money to buy the module and get it programed get it checked first. Goot Luck

I turn the engine on and the headlights come on automaticaly

This sounds like DRL (daytime running lights) or, much like my 97 grand prix, the headlights came on without any user interaction, as soon as the parking brake was released, and was enabled by a photosensor on the dash.
