You need to get it scanned to find out why the engine light is on. But be careful, it can have multple codes that dont directly relate to the problem.

Many auto parts stores have code scanners and will check your codes free.

Once we have the code, we'll have an idea where to start looking for your problem.

Is the serpentine belt still intact? The grinding noise maybe the water pump which would account for the overheating.

Have you changed the timing belt? It is supposed to be replaced every 65,000 miles. That would be the first thing to check. IT will cost about 500 USD to have a dealer change it if there is no damage from it breaking. When they break, the pistons can hit the valves and cause lots of damage.

More than likely, you have a failed fan clutch. That is a frequent problem on the 4.3 I6 engine. It will cause a roaring noise and "vibration" and allow the engine to overheat at low road speeds. As far as your check engine light and other driveablity problems, it may or may not be associated. Have someone with a code reader check it. The TrailBlazers were infamous for electrical gremlins.

This would indicate a problem with the automatic choke. Putting the pedal to the floor creates the same effect as the choke when starting the car.

Surge in idle when brakes applied or after driving..

block off vacuum hose to brake booster and see if idle returns to normal if it does you need new brake booster has hole in diaphram internally some times slight hissing noise is evident in cab when pressing brake pedal to section where engine surges or idles high. also check for fuel leaks from hoses if you can smell fuel in engine bay while running and engine warm some leaks only leak while running and hot

You will need to do a fuel pump pressure check. You will need to borrow a gauge or purchase one ($40 to $50), attach it to the fuel injector rail test port, it will have a little black cap on it, turn the key to the run position. Your fuel pressure should be in the range of 45 to 55 lbs.

The knocking noise is a little peculiar, check the engine oil for proper level and smell the dip stick. It may smell like gas, if it does, change the oil immediately. The gasoline has diluted the oil and is to thin, causing the knock.
Let me know.

Car starts fine...but dosent run

ok... first question... the Tach(rpm guage) does change when you rev your engine in either P or neutral? Also.. is your check engine light on? any odd smells(burnt eggs) if your check engine light is on.. it's most likely a fualty sensor.. based on educated guess idle air control valve .. ot maybe posibly a faulty throttle position sensor.. if you have a foul smell.. similar to eggs or just nasty... could be a catalytic converter went bad... reply and lemme know if i help.. or raise new questions :D
